Dave Barton recently posted that the Spring rates for the metal chassis cars are 250 lbs front and 170 lbs rear. That sounds about right from what I can remember.
Believe it or not, but I'm pretty sure I still have the original packaging for the Koni shocks, full of spare Volvo engine parts at home in Aurora. When I go home next weekend, I'll check to see if the model number is printed on the box or on the shocks themselves. Either way, I'll let you know next week. As I said, I got them through the Marcos Owners Club for a very reasonable price. I recall that Jem Marsh kicked up a major fuss with Koni because the club was undercutting his prices significantly, basically supplying them at cost. So Koni more or less doubled the price to the club, which continued to sell them until around the time that Rory McMath started Marcos Heritage Spares. I don't recall exactly how much they cost me (though I can look it up on the weekend), but it was probably 15 years ago and they weren't cheap. I shudder to think how much they'd be now.
I only put around 2000 miles a year on the Marcos, and the shocks are still working fine. The previous Spax shocks wore out in only a few years. However, I put leathercloth boots around the springs when I put the Konis on the car to prevent dust and grit from wearing the shafts, and it seems to have worked very well.
I looked through the latest Marcos Owners Club magazine last night to see if the shocks were listed in the spares section but they weren't. However, as an indication of Rory's mark-ups, the windshield that I bought through the club last year is listed at more than twice the price from Rory.

Huh, that sounds like a plan!

I will probably try and replace the springs as well, since they are VERY rusty.

Do you remember if the front and rear springs the same?

Also, do you remember what model of Koni shocks you got, and where you got them?

Jeff,

I fit the Konis to replace the Spax originals on my car a looooonnnngggg time ago. I bought a new set of springs at the same time but they were the same size as the originals. They were available through the Marcos Owners Club in England for quite a reasonable price but alas, no more. I understand you can get them from Rory McMath at Marcos Heritage Spares though you may need to take out a second mortgage.

What you are seeing is not an optical illusion, I assure you. The front is definitely higher than the back.

I think it was about an inch and half higher than the rear. I measured from the bottom of the black strip to the floor of my garage behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel.

I also measured the tire-to-wheel-arch distance to be off about the same amount.

Will the Konis fit in the coil springs on the front?

Right now it has Spax shocks.

Jeff,

Looking at the driver's side photo of your car, it does appear that the nose is a little high. The black strip underneath the door should be parallel to the road surface and the gap above the wheels should be the same front and rear. Mind you, it could be an optical illusion, or, if the road surface is sloping, as appears to be the case, the weight could more on the rear causing the nose to lift. I would have expected the V6 engine to be heavy enough to compress the springs to required amount. Either way, the easy way to level the car is to fit Koni adjustable shocks, which allow you to adjust the height by a couple of inches.

Hi All,

I have what seems a silly question, but after having other people see my car finally, one comment keeps popping up.

\u201cIs the nose supposed to be that high\u201d?

Now, I think I read somewhere that a Marcos GT is supposed to have a somewhat high nose, but it does seem rather high up to me. And this from an outside perspective, not sunk in behind the wheel. Look at the pictures in the group photo section to see what I am talking about.

Does anyone else\u2019s car have the same characteristics? I think I saw a yellow car in the pictures of the California Marcos gathering that looked as if it did the same thing.

Could it be a spring thing since mine came over as a kit? Maybe mine was actually sprung for a heavier engine or something\u2026.

Anyone???.....
