RE: [MarcosManiacs] Windshield Wipers

2006-06-14 by Dransfield, Paul

Hi Michael,

I have a 3 litre Volvo with triple Solex carbs, Volvo competition inlet
manifolds and Volvo 164E exhaust manifolds. They are very similar to Webers
to the extent that a lot of parts are interchangeable. The Solex carbs are
35+years old and they occasionally leak around the spindles so I once
investigated changing to Webers. I scoured the internet and called a number
of Weber specialists looking for an inlet manifold which would accommodate
the Weber linkage , which is different from the Solex linkage, to no avail.
The best they could do was to suggest I adopt my current inlet manifolds by
welding on the appropriate linkage posts. I do know that Ken Churchill in
England fitted triple Dellortos to his 3 litre Volvo for racing to good
effect. You would need the 164E (fuel injection) exhaust manifolds along
with a custom header if you switched to a triple setup. Fuel consumption is
significantly increased over the Strombergs, though that's also a function
of a ported head, large valves and a rally cam on an engine which puts out
235bhp. I acquired the triple Solex setup when I bought one of a pair of
Volvo Penta performance marine engines, based on the B30 block, (gulp) 20
years ago. My God, has it been that long? Converting to automobile use was
very straightforward, removing the marine components and attaching the
automobile ones from the original engine. The only major component which
needed changing was the cam because the marine cam was not appropriate for
road use. It might be an avenue worth investigating if you are really
serious, but as Don says, as rare as hen's teeth. If you would like
additional info, let me know.

Regards,

Hi Ron,

Rain-X and go fast!!

By the way, I have A 3 litre Volvo staight six and the Zenith Srombergs are
driving me crazy, do you know of any source of Volvo performance parts where
I could get either a double or triple Weber setup?

Thanks

Michael

Maniacs . . .

That should be windscreen wipers, I guess. I only drive my Mantis on sunny
summer weekends, but a week ago, on the way home from a car show, I got
caught in a real deluge - rain coming down in buckets. And I discovered
that my windshield wipers are verrrry slowwww. Not surprising, perhaps, as
the motor and and all the under-dash stuff are original (35 years old), and
I can't remember the last time I had to use them.

So, my question is, what should I do to restore proper operation of my
windscreen wipers, so that when I get caught in another downpour, they will
perform as expected?

Thanks in advance.
