That is the best source for Volvo parts I’ve ever seen. Thanks for passing
it along. It’s a shame there are no Solex parts listed, but I’ve sent them
an email inquiry hoping they’ll reply with a source. On page 45 (numbered 82
at the bottom) the second picture down in the left column shows my inlet
manifolds, though there doesn’t appear to be a price. Does anyone know what
UTGAR means? Can anyone translate the description? However I don’t see a
triple Weber manifold. Could you point me in the right direction?

If you download this catalog you will find a wealth of volvo engine
performance parts. They make a triple weber manifold as well. Its mostly in
swedish, but you can sort it out as there are loads of photos.

Donny is correct that the triple Solex setup requires a modification to the
engine mounts to raise the engine in little, slightly more on the right side
to clear the upper frame rail. The adjustment for me was quite minor
resulting in a slight tilt of the engine and a small adjustment to the
carburetor floats to compensate. However, having extensive experience with
the triple Solex setup, I have to correct some of Donny’s assertions. There
were standard and performance marine applications using Solex carburetors. I
was fortunate to acquire a setup that has the triple 2 barrel side draft
Solex carbs, which were used for both marine and automobile applications.
Quite a number of Swedish Volvo 3 litre and 1800 owners have the 2 barrel
Solex carbs fitted but they are very rare and parts are almost impossible to
come by, though Weber jets and other items can be substituted if necessary.
I had extensive correspondence with a number of them when I was undergoing
the conversion. The performance inlet manifolds are 3 separate units, one
for each carb and the 164E exhaust manifold has two pieces, one for the
front 3 cylinders and one for the rear 3. I made an aluminum heat to deflect
the heat from the exhaust manifold and I have K&N filters fitted to custom
made aluminum inlet tubes.

Michael, I looked at and drove your car when Hayes had it for sale back in
2001, but ended up buying a project Marcos and a TVR from him instead. I
guess you got the transmission leak fixed? 

 

As far as carburetion goes, the stock Stromberg setup isn't too bad for
everyday driving and is one of the easiest to maintain. At the time I was
looking at you car, I had a Volvo-Penta marine triple Solex setup from a B30
that I was looking to fit to the car. Though I never tried it (because I
didn't buy the car), I don't think that setup would bolt into the Marcos
because of interference with the upper frame rail. I think that this is the
setup that Don L. was talking about. The marine version used three 1 barrel
carbs, not to be confused with Solex/DelOrto/Weber 2 barrel side draft
carbs. I sold my intake/carb assembly to a friend, but may possibly be able
to find another. Your best bet is to try to find the rare triple side draft
manifold (not marine), or just swap out a pair of 1 3/4 SUs from an early
Volvo or various British cars.  - Donny

That should be windscreen wipers, I guess.  I only drive my Mantis on sunny
summer weekends, but a week ago, on the way home from a car show, I got
caught in a real deluge - rain coming down in buckets.  And I discovered
that my windshield wipers are verrrry slowwww.  Not surprising, perhaps, as
the motor and and all the under-dash stuff are original (35 years old), and
I can't remember the last time I had to use them. 

 

  

 

So, my question is, what should I do to restore proper operation of my
windscreen wipers, so that when I get caught in another downpour, they will
perform as expected?
