You
will definitely need spring compressors - if you didn't, that would mean that
springs were so loose at full shock extension that they would flop around and
come off the top plate - that would be a mess.
Fortunately you can remove the shock/spring unit and work on it on a
bench. I found it useful to undo the top "pin" mounting first, then the
bottom "eye" mounting.

I know the spring length is 12" but with the car jacked up is the
extension great enuf to allow removal without a compressor?
