Marcos article in British Car Magazine

2002-05-16 by Jeff Caraway

Hi All,
I just got through reading the Marcos article in the British Car
magazine and thought I'd encourage everyone to get this edition if you
haven't already!
It's a great article with some nice shots and great comments on 4 of our
member's cars.

It's a must have!!!

Thanks to Mike, Don, Steve, and Mark for making this article possible
and giving Marcos such great exposure.

Hello Maniacs,
I just got back from taking a look at the 68 Marcos in Fairfield and to say
that it is in a sad way is an understatement ,I do covet the wind shield but
$1500 is alot to pay for a piece of glass.
Last week a great fantasy of mine was made real I saw my car front and center
on the cover of a nationally published magazine. This is a car guys dream come
true and I could not be more pleased .This finally puts to rest the cosy to
benefit issue to rest for a while.
It is a mystery to me why my car was chosen to grace the cover but it is too
late now and I am euphoric to say the least.
Thancks to lee Brinkley for the spot on information about the brake bits
,This was a real time saver.
Regards Mark,OH and happy birthday to me

Stepfon
The car I saw is to far gone for someone of my kind of time and cash flow .Mike Denman and I talked a bit last night and we both agreed that if anybody willing and able to do a revival would do it for love not profit. The engine is at a shop the tranny is in pieces all the gelcoat is in need of much work the hood is badly damaged .I did not check the frame but it has been in the outdoors for some years now so ,as Mike said anything can be restored it all depends on your desire to see it through. It can be done I guess but not by me well, thats my opinion for what it is worth.

Steve,etal,
I did not intend to say that the car is a total loss and should be scrapped
,if there is someone out there that want's to do the job I encourage them to
do so .I would love to see another Marcos in the area and all the parts of
the car are more or less in one place .

Mark,

I just picked up a copy of the British Car Magazine and I share your excitement. It is really great to see a Marcos grace the pages of a magazine especially the front cover! I can only imagine it being my car. The photos were great and the article was very complimentary.

I was a little set back by the statement that "locating a Marcos might be a little tougher than finding an MGB". I believe there are only about 40 or so Marcos cars in North America making them a whole lot rarer than an MGB in the US and Canada. Great plug for Wire Wheel Classic Sports Cars though.

There are about 40 in Canada (total for all models) based upon my research a
few years ago. I understand that about 200 or so went to the USA

David,

I did not realize that that many were in Canada. I had heard about ten years
ago that quite a number had made it to the US and Canada but no one had an
idea of how many. My car was shipped over by the original owner from Africa
so it certainly would have never been on anyone's list. I am sure there are
many others as well. The Marco Owners Club did keep lists of its members but
were very reluctant to just give out a complete list. I was a member for
many years and only dropped my subsciption after three unsuccessful attempts
to send cashiers checks for the yearly dues. Maybe we can try contacting the
MOC publisher and see if the archives are still available to try and compile
a more comprehensive list of the North American owners. I do have an old
list with around 21 owners from about 10 years ago but it does not have the
chassis numbers so it would be difficult to cross reference it with todays
owners.

Michael,

The Marcos Owners Club has a standing policy that they will not provide any
lists of members' names and addresses. They would probably let us know how
many current members are from the US and Canada, and they would probably
publish an ad asking North American members contact Marcos Maniacs. Dave
McCubbin is correct regarding the number of cars originally sent to the US
and Canada but there are others not on the original list, mine included.

At one time I knew of 8 other coupes in the Toronto area alone but I've lost
touch with a lot of them. One, Owned by Duncan Day, moved out to British
Columbia and another owned by Ted McGregor moved to Alberta, but I
understand he's now living in Ottawa. One has been sitting for quite a few
years now with a crushed roof following a garage roof collapse. There's one
in Sudbury, Ontario, which is a few hours away. There is one in Oakville
(not including Dave's gullwing and Ron's Mantis) and one in Markham, both
quite close to Toronto. These two owners are friends who do a lot of racing,
though I don't think they're racing the Marcoses, and they prefer to go
racing on the weekend rather than attend local car shows. There was a green
one in Kitchener, about 1 1/2 hours away, but it was offered for sale a few
years ago and I haven't a clue what happened to it. And finally there was a
bastardised grey 3 litre Volvo in Toronto with a very low ratio rear diff
and Lotus shocks. The owner was a bit of a cowboy (with apologies to any
real cowboys among you) and not an enthusiast like the rest of us, and he
seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

So, including Dave, Ron and me, there are/were 11 in this area that I know
of but only the three of us are known to the rest of you.

Regards,

Hey Paul,
Don't forget about me I am only about an hour away from all
3 of you guys.... just south of Guelph .........Paul you are correct
about the steering linkage I had to remove it on my car to replace the
spherical(self aligning) rod ends........cleaning off the shafts and
spraying a bit of WD-40 will add in sliding the shafts thru the rod
ends.
        Cheers Dave #5577
