15" wheels

15" wheels

Hi all,

Has anyone put 15" wheels/tires on their pre-1972 Marcos??  I currently have
the original 13" wheels with 195/70HR13 tires.  I wondering if 15" wheels
with 225/50HR15 tires would have enough clearance.  225/50HR15 tires have
the same circumference as my current tires so ride-height would remain the
same.  Pretty sure 15s' would fit in the rear wheel wells but I'm concerned
about the front steering clearance.

Any help??

I'd like some input too. I've decided to go to a larger wheel myself and
know that a 14" is doable but would like to go up to 15" as well if
possible. The only problem I can envision is the wider wheel fouling during
full steering lock. I've been putting it off for months because I can't
decide what wheel design I want. Did you come up with anything interesting
with four bolt holes?

Dave Barton, did you make it to Ancaster last Sunday? It was so busy, it was
hard finding anybody but I didn't see any TVRs there.

I've seen 15" on a Mantula but don't know what the differences are. I'd really like to get this figured out so that others can benefit. Thered is only one place I can get the 195/70HR13 tires and who knows how long that will last.
I'll do some more searching.

 Paul I came down with the flu on Saturday........from all reports I 
missed a really good show.......my 0.02c on the wheel question......
I am using 205/60/13 on my car that is what it had on it when I 
bought it ,I just bought new tyres as the others were race tyres
The rim has a 3" backspace ,that is its  measured from the mounting 
face of the rim to the outer bead of the rim .I have no suspension 
interference even with the wider tyre .......with a taller rim you 
may be able to go further inboard(more backspace) because you might 
be above the upper balljoint with the inside of the rim. Check 
carefully with full suspension travel.........remove the shock and 
cycle the suspension up and down to check clearances .
  As for rims I looked high and low for a particular style wuth the 
correct backspace and bolt circle for another car and eventually went 
to a modular rim........the backspacing and widths can be custom 
tailored to youR needs ........a bit more money but worth it I think

  They are COMPOMOTIVE rims they are available in the US at a company 
called MOTORSPORTS SPECIALTIES in Pennsylvania.......the rims on the 
Marcos are 7" in front and rear.......I did give some bad info last 
post......the front rims have a 4" backspace not 3" the rears have a 
3" backspace

Folks,
The original Marcos alloys are 5.5" x 13" with a 3" backspace and a .25" + offset. Measured mine last night.
Here is a link that explains backspace and offset. Same place you got your wheels Dave.
As far as I can tell, the Mantula has the same front suspension as the pre 1972 cars but has a wider Capri rear axle. They widened the rear by 4 inches. In the book "Marcos, Coupes and Spyders" it has a few reviews from different mags regarding the Mantula. In one article it says the car has 205/60 vr14 tires. Next article says it has 195/60HR14 in front and 205/60HR14 in the rear. Then in 1987 another road test says it has 6 inch rims with 225/60VR14 tires. In 1991 when they introduced the Mantula Spyder they went to a independant rear end and used 6" x15" wheels in front with 195/55VR15 tires and 7" x 15" wheels in the rear with 205/55VR15 tires.
Confused yet??
So................14" doesn't look to be any problem at all. Stephen Spaldings Marcos has 14" wires.
15" on the other hand will take some thinking. To NOT extend the tires further outwards, the backspace has to increase with any wheel width increase. Going to a 6" wheel, you would need a backspace of 3.25" to maintain the +.25" offset. Going to a 7" wheel, you would need a backspace of 3.75" to mantain the +.25" offset. Doesn't sound too bad now!? A 7" wheel would extend the wheel .75" further inward than currently.

Now I'M confused.................. I better do a spreadsheet on this whole deal. More later.

As far as I can tell, the Mantula has the same front suspension as the pre
1972 cars but has a wider Capri rear axle.  They widened the rear by 4
inches.  In the book "Marcos, Coupes and Spyders" it has a few reviews from
different mags regarding the Mantula.  In one article it says the car has
205/60 vr14 tires.  Next article says it has 195/60HR14 in front and
205/60HR14 in the rear.  Then in 1987 another road test says it has 6 inch
rims with 225/60VR14 tires.  In 1991 when they introduced the Mantula Spyder
they went to a independant rear end and used 6" x15" wheels in front with
195/55VR15 tires and 7" x 15" wheels in the rear with 205/55VR15 tires.
 
Confused yet??
 
So................14" doesn't look to be any problem at all.  Stephen

15" on the other hand will take some thinking.  To NOT extend the tires
further outwards, the backspace has to increase with any wheel width
increase.  Going to a 6" wheel, you would need a backspace of 3.25" to
maintain the +.25" offset.  Going to a 7" wheel, you would need a backspace
of 3.75" to mantain the +.25" offset.  Doesn't sound too bad now!?  A 7"
wheel would extend the wheel .75" further inward than currently.

called MOTORSPORTS SPECIALTIES in Pennsylvania.......the rims on the

    Sorry I'm having machine problems!!!  My two cents is that tire size and
offset, change key suspension settings.  Given the a age of the cars moving
to newer tire technology can make big improvements, but be ready to change
other elements at the same time, Mike D. did a complete job on his car.  I
didn't go as far as Mike but I did change the following:  I did go to 14'
wheels (from Dayton, which they build for the car)  and I but plus one
series tires which only increased the overall radius  about 1/4 of an inch
(195/65 R14) over the 13 inch Avon tires the car was sold with new.  This
with new adjustable spax shocks works great for a local go drive the curves
of Marin County car, where I live (for an open road travel car, this would
be far to hard of a set up).  When the wheel is hard over there is not much
room left so the car has a hard stop limit, which you can not get around
without major work, which I did not want to do on my car.
