AVO shocks

AVO shocks

2003-05-10 by Don Lattimer

I bought my AVO shocks direct Aug 15 2002. Cost was 130 pounds for two. Approx. 200 USD. My mistake was not ordering all four at once. I ordered the front two and paid 60 pounds for shipping! Then ordered the back two and paid aother 60 pounds shipping. Not smart!
The nice thing about them is that they are height adjustable AND the damping is adjustable. Perfect for those low cars. I am quite satisfied so far with the shocks. I'm still playing with the settings.
The biggest difference was replacing the springs with new ones. Two rear springs were 36 pounds (18 pounds each) from Demon Tweeks. Best to order the springs with the shocks from AVO and save the shipping charge for multiple shipments.

Don,
I will be replacing a bent lower Radius Rod on the drivers side,
sourced from Rory, I did a search to find your email as my shocks
are "tired" and I'll have the rear end apart. Do you have any other
advice on the shocks/springs --- you mentioned you should have got
the springs from AVO but I didn't find them on their website... I
have the Mantula frame/body with the Ford 2.8 Cologne V6. I have
used the info from your email in an inquiry to AVO, they may answer
some of these ???, but the more I know the better off I'll be...
Thanks for any help,
Paul

Paul,
I'm very happy with my shock/spring setup. Haven't bottomed out in months!
On the AVO website click on "products", then "race coil springs", then "2.25" race coil springs". All the different weights and lengths are listed.
Let me know if you have more questions.

Don,
I'm not real mechanical, I usually pay for work other than brakes...
Do you have the specs of the springs you bought---or do the old ones
need to be taken out and measured? Since springs aren't as pricey,
if I can't find out what I need w/o pulling the suspension apart I
will probabally order springs from Rory, I've had good luck with his
parts, but they are sometimes pricey, plus it'd be nice to only pay
one set of shipping charges... I am still waiting to hear from AVO
regarding the shocks, how was your experience with them?
Thanks again,

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Re: AVO shocks

2003-07-09 by Don Lattimer

Paul,
Have you looked into Rory's "Active Handling Kit"? I've heard a lot of good reports about it. It just consists of new springs and shocks I believe. ; That would save the time and energy of having to order from AVO and Rory plus shipping charges. I think when all is said and done that Rory's kit is around the same price as the AVO setup. I went with the AVO because it is adjustable, both in height and damping. Depends on your driving habits I guess.
My experience with AVO was super on the first order of shocks (5 days) but the second set took three weeks. By the way, I got the springs from Demon Tweeks, not AVO.
For future reference, on the V6 models like mine the front springs are 250 lbs. and the rears are 170 lbs. The height of the springs are 12 inches and the internal diameter is 2.25 inches.
Now that I think about it, you might want to check with Rory to see what the Mantula frame uses for spring rates. May be different. Also the "bump steer kit" Rory has is for the Mantulas I believe. You better ask Rory!
Hope this helps.

I have Rory's Active Handling kit on my #l Volvo. It is shocks and springs. The ride is much better than th original equipment. It took about 4 days to get here.

Re: AVO shocks

2003-08-13 by jvbotha

We are running the full shock/spring kit from AVO on out woodie
Marcos.

We have so far had good results with them on 195/60 group-N treaded
tyres at 2 bar front and 2.1 rear. Start at about 10/12 clicks from
0. Using a 22mm solid front A/Roll bar. Despite being locked into the
50/50 split they seem to respond well to average track conditions.
(tending towards understeer with standard chassis rake)

The fulll shock/spring kit is listed on their website somewhere.
Better results gauranteed if you 'phone them.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Re: AVO shocks

2003-08-13 by Don Lattimer

JV,
Those are the same I use. I set them at about 7 clicks for street use. Currently running 195/70 R13 tires.
Do you know the camber of your front wheels? If so, what length are the front springs when the car is sitting level? I recently discovered that my camber was way too negative and wore the inside of the tires out. Adjusting the collar on the shock body changes the camber. While adjusting mine I discovered the spring starting to bow so now have new front springs on order.

Re: AVO shocks

Hi Don

I have fabricated upper and lower wishbones with rose joints. Also
relocated pickup points slightly, bent steering arms and shimmed the
rack. I am not sure if the settings will be the same. I will measure
the spring lengths and let you know. Camber runs around 2 deg. -+ 0.5.

(Pics of car in files section)

Will try and let you know tomorrow.

Cheers

Re: AVO shocks

2003-08-15 by jvbotha

Hi Don

Checked spring lengths in car on stands and I am not certain that
they were fully extended so I have included a thread count.

Front- 258mm (+- 6 thread peaks exposed below spring seat nut)

Rear- 266mm (+- 3 thread peaks exposed below spring seat nut)

If the springs are bowing, it maked me expect that they are
overcompressed.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

JV

are the front springs when the car is sitting level? I recently
discovered that my camber was way too negative and wore the inside of
the tires out. Adjusting the collar on the shock body changes the
camber. While adjusting mine I discovered the spring starting to bow
so now have new front springs on order.

JV,
Perfect! Set them at your lengths prior to install and camber comes out about right. +/- 2 degrees. Ride height is good also. Thanks!
