Locks

2001-10-13 by Mike Denman

Does anyone know the source of the lock on the trunk for the older
(1966) Marcos cars? I don't have a key for mine and the local
locksmith doesn't seem to have a clue how to make one. The parts
interchange list doesn't seem to list one.

Mike,
Can you post a pix of it on the site, I have several British car nut
friends that can probably identify it, they have fun telling me what
cars all my "bits" like that are from.

Locks

Hi Guys,

Sorry I've not replied sooner, I've been away on business.

Any way, you are quite right that the recess on my doors is perfectly
round and that the original MGB boot locks were also completely round
(I refer of course to the base of the locks here). The new locks
which I purchased from Marcos Heritage (all using the same key!), do
not have a completely round base, instead they have a lobe whcih is
positioned just below the latch part of the lock, if you take a look
on www.mossmotors.com and selct MGB then rear body fittings, (the
link is http://www.mossmotors.com/cgi-
bin/db2www/mossmotors/MossUSA/Shop/ViewProducts.mac/report?
T=32679&ModelID=31000&PlateID=2522 ), you will see a picture of the
odd shaped washer (compete with lobe - sorry I can not think of a
more suitable word!). As I mentioned I was able to saw/file these off
very easily to produce the original round shape! I will be back with
my car again in about 10days so I will picture the old and new locks
so you can better understand the problem. The boot of course does not
need to have this files since it mounts to a flat surface.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused!

My next dilema is whether or not to replace the wiring loom witha new
one - I am being quoted £240 to have one made up from the original
plans, the only modification being wiring for an alternator instead
of a dynamo. How does this sound to you guys? any experience of doing
this or any problems with your old looms so to speak?

Regards

Ashley

PS Mike if you are reading this, many thanks for the copy of the
manual which arrived today, please do let me know if you want
anything for this or if you need any help getting stuff for you your
car from the UK!?

Hey gang, I guess that I'll enter the lock debate at this point. I have already purchased a new pair of door handle locks for my Marcos, and after reading all of the debate, checked out whay my car uses.
I bought the wrong handles/locks! (sounds like the same ones Ashley got). I ordered mine from Victoria British to fit the rear hatch of a MGB-GT. Under the finger-pull, there is indeed a "lobe" at the mounting surface. My originals are round. A local locksmith charged $5.00 to re-key a perfect orignal MG take-off and two new locks I purchased. Now it seems I will have to use my originals or grind off the "lobe" and use the new ones.
Another difference between the original Marcos locks and the MG locks is the length of the finger-pull. They both look almost identical until you compare them side by side. The MG ones are about 1/4 inch longer on the finger pull ;projection.
Now I have a related question I would like to figure out. The door on my car is flush or straight where the door lock mounts, except for about a 3/16" recess for the lock. When I was at Hayes Harris's shop looking at the various Marcos cars (Jeff Caraway's, yellow 3 liter Volvo automatic, and my red V-4), I noticed all the cars but mine have a "scallop" bulge in the door skin where the lock is fitted. Does anyone else have a flush or straight doorskin around the lock? I'll try to get some pictures posted!

Hi Donny,

Thanks for posting this! This is great information!

My car isn’t the Yellow Volvo though. That would be Michael Crews’. Mine is a Regency Red Ford V6 and was probably already in my hands when you visited Wire Wheels.

Back to the locks….

In looking at my locks and doors, I think the MG versions will work fine for me. My doors actually have a cut-out indention in the door under the locks and my locks are already the lobed type. Also, mine does have the scallop that you were talking about as well.

Since you had to get your locks re-keyed, I would guess that Victoria British couldn’t send you multiple locks with the same key?

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Locks

Jeff, I did check out your car at Hayes's the first time I visited. That was when I made most of my observations checking out Marcos cars. Your car was being preped for shipping. Nice car!
About the locks, I did not look closely enough, but Marcos seems to have changed that part on the door on later models. I have some digital pictures of the details, but I don't know how to download them or to where (I'm not the greatest with computers!).
I never asked Victoria British to try to match locks to a set of keys. Its not that hard to re-key a lock. If I can figure out how to download the pics, you can see if the later locks are the same as the ones I purchased.
- Donny 2M 5846?
P.S. - I keep putting a question mark after my car number (as titled) because Rory says the number doesn't match what my car is. My car was clearly a V-4 but Rory says #5846 is a 3 liter Volvo.

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Locks

Donny,
After looking at pics of your car, the door seems smooth in the
door-lock area. I've never seen that! Mine has a recess as do the
later ones and the earlier ones have the door-pull integrated into the
rear edge of the door. Strange. Maybe some better pics would help.

Are you sure your car # isn't 5486?? That would make more sense.
