Brochure labelled Paul Weidner in the photo section???

Brochure labelled Paul Weidner in the photo section???

2001-08-09 by Jeff Caraway

OK,
This Brochure labelled Paul Weidner in the Photo section has me very puzzled!
What is the time period on this thing????
It appears to be a brochure from the well known MR. Bob Boston since the address given is in GA and it mentions the cars being imported as kits. Does this mean that 200 cars were imported to the US?/ NA? prior to Mr. Boston's operation?
That would actually make more sense to me as it seems that there are way more 60/70s era cars out there than 80s era cars (which is when they were being imported as kits).
Help please......

Hi Jeff,
I posted the brochure for Paul who hasn't joined us yet on this list.
Paul said he would take time this weekend to join. I really don't
know any more about the brochure than that. Perhaps when Paul joins
us he can shed some light on your questions. I also have some old
brochures stashed away and I will dig those out and get them posted.
Eventually I would like to have all the information in my files in a
format so anyone who is interested in something can download it to a
hard copy.

Hi all,

this is my first entry and of course, although a Marcos Maniac in
one sense, I'm an eastpondsider. :^)

Anyway, I meant to reply to this when it was a discussion on the mail
list.

There were, indeed, a large number of 60s cars (actually early 70s)
exported to the states. A major part of the collapse of Marcos in
1972 was due to the fact they shipped a large consignment of cars to
the US (The Volvo straight 6 was selected, in parallel with the Ford
Essex V6, partly because it was already federalised).

Under rules at the time, manufacturers producing less than (I can't
remember the exact number) say a 1000 cars a year, could dodge
certain type approval rules.

However, so the story goes, US Customs couldn't believe that a
company producing so few cars in total could ship so many in one
shipment and impounded the cars for months whilst they investigated.
Part of the result of this was the lack of cash flow (no cars were,
obviously, sold) and the company folded.

Therefore, it's safe to assume that most of the cars in the US were
actually imported their for sale new, rather than being personal
imports. Some obvious exceptions would be RHD cars and post 80s cars,
which were never imported, officially, into the States.

I recall hearing a story at one point that part of the reason the
Mantis used the Mustang engine was that it was federalised and there
was some hope that, maybe, a deal could be struck with Ford to sell
the cars in the US, through selected outlets. I don't know, however,
how far this idea ever advanced and I certainly don't believe it ever
happened.

Hope this helps.

Mark

PS Great idea, this site. I was just about to take myself off the e-
mail list as my web mail service couldn't cope with the volume! I'll
post details of this service on my site.

Hi all,

Jeff, you are indeed correct. That is from Bob Boston. In fact, I
have a copy of the entire 4 page newletter (pictured is page 2). It
was called MARCOS MAGIC and was purported to be published 3 times
yearly. This particular issue was from 1983 and discusses the
following: 1983 MARCOS w/ standard a/c, the purchase of 500 radiator
cooling fans from the recently defunct DeLorean works, Brian Byrd as
a new dealer in Austin, TX, shipping through Canada, stress crack
repair, description of stage kits, and an available parts listing.

There is no mention of the number of North American cars imported.
All that is said is "After all, Marcos built 2400 complete cars so we
should know what we're doing." I presume he is referring to all of
the factory builds to that time.

Regards,
Tad

Hi Mark,
Glad to have you with us!
Thanks for the info. I had heard about the seized shipment before.
If only that hadn't happened, who knows what Marcos' fortunes would have been?

Hi Maniacs,
I am probably responsible for "screwing" up this thread by putting my
reply at the bottom when it started. I believe that they should be at
the top to read correctly. Regardless, what I would like to add to
this discussion goes beyond this particular brochure. Tad mentions
the brochure I posted that has tech tips on repairing stress cracks.
This is a brochure that Tad also has although each of us, Tad and
Myself, don't have a copy of Pauls brochure. The point I am driving
to is, lets get all of this stuff up on the site and see what we
collectively have as a group. It doesn't have to be pretty, just get
it posted. As I said in my email announcing the opening of the site,
we are currently working on some additional things that are pretty
exciting. Eventually we will need access to all this material. The
first step is identifing exactly what we have and whatelse might exist
"out there". Mark Saxby, of the Unofficial Marcos Web site (the
absolute, very best Marcos Website out there...link available under
bookmarks on this site)has agreed to help us and has already posted
his parts interchange list under "files" on this web site. I have
gotten committments from several other sources to help us as well.
The point is we need to "capture" all the information we have
collectively and make it available to anyone and everyone who needs
it. So I would like each of you to rummage through your old files and
binders etc. and start posting the information that you have. You can
also email me directly with the information if that works for you. We
can "refine" the information later if need be, to put it into a useful
format etc. So let's all make a committment to post something new
every day and see what we have. Don't worry too much about appearances
at this point.... some items don't scan or photograph well. If it is
something that is useful, then we can always retype it or something.
Contribute, do something. Be part of the solution!

Thanks,

Hello All,

I know most but probably not all have a copy of a copy of a copy of a
wiring schematic. I had both a 4 and 6 that I got from Isabel Chivers
or Tad. I was wondering if anyone had a clear enough copy to post. I
sure do not and I imagine it would be of value. I understood the
wires hooked up but I also had orphans under the dash and it is nice
to know where they belong.
