V6 engine mount advice.

V6 engine mount advice.

2005-01-04 by Ash

Firstly a happy new year to one and all, I've just visited the forum
after a small break for Xmas and see it has been a hive of activity!

Any way, also during my break I ventured out to my garage to ponder my
engine mount dilema (see previous messages for full history or see
www.marcosworld.com). Any way I've looked once again at some pictures
which Don kindly emailed me, and can see that the left hand bank of
cylinders (looking from in the car) should be pretty close to the
bulkhead chassis rail, I would say may as close as 1/4". Mine
currently sits a full 6" further forward!! so on this basis I've
measured the poisition of the engine mounts from where they are to 6"
back and see that by my reckoning the square mounting that sits on the
chasis (which then has the flat plate and rubber engine mount on it),
should be just forward of the footwell chassis rail (eg the rail
behind the wheel arch liner). The exact postition seems to be such
that the mounting is exactly 1 1/2" in front of the rail (eg the width
of the square chassis rail) Can any one confirm this for me please?

also if any one could measure the distance that the engine (Ford V6
essex) is in front of the bulkhead rail and also the height of the top
of the heads below the rail.

I would also like to know the clearance of the bulge on any other V6
car as I am not convinced that mine will take a filter at the moment,
at first I wondered if this was due to the inclusion of additional
spacer plates on the carb but I can see the same ones on Don's
pictures.

Any help measurement will be appreciated.

I will place a picture of the mounting position as I see it on this
site shorlty so you can see if you agree.

Many thanks

OK I've added a poicture to the photo's section under Ashley
Questions. The piucture shows the full chassis, if you follow the
label to the engine mounts I'v added two grey sqares on both rails
where I think the mountings for the V6 need to be, note this is not
directly on top of the foward lower footwell railas shown by the line
but forward by the width of a rail (1 1/2"). any confirmation of this
would be most appreciated then I can start asking everyone about
gearbox mounts!!! whilst we are on that any ideas which 4 speed with
overdrive boxes those with the V6 are using? (appolgies as I know I've
asked this once before!!)

Ash,
The gearbox is a Ford Type 4 I believe. Somewhat like the 2000E Bullet gearbox but heavier duty. Used in the Zodiac. It is a 3-rail gearbox.
As far as bonnet clearance and the filter...........it is mighty close! I would say 1/4". I had to adjust the bonnet to get mine to quit rubbing.
I'll try to get some frame measurements this week.

Ash,

The gearbox is a Type 5, not 4. A description of it can be found in
the Burton Power catalog.
