Marcos Handbrake

2008-01-28 by hide809rig169

I have an 1982, #8001 Marcos with the Capri rear axle (the gears
unload from the rear). How does the rear handbrake work? Does it use
the Capri, relay lever, rear pulley (on top of left axle tube), and
transverse cable, like the capri did? My car has a "tab/bracket"
welded on top of the left hand axle tube as per the build
instructions, but that bracket is not shown in the Capri workshop
manual. I assume the handbrake works on both rear brakes? So does
Marcos use their own handbrake assembly? The cable that goes from the
floor mounted lever to the handbrake assembly (how ever it works), is
that cable Marcos specific? My car is left hand drive. The Marcos
build manual states; the cable fits to the compensating mechanism of
the rear axle". What is the "compensating device"? Is there enough
room between the relay lever and panhard bar, if the car uses the
Capri handbrake assembly? All my car has, is
a cable from the handbrake and the bracket on the axle.
Thanks, Steve V. #8001 In Arizona

Hi,
The rear hand brake mechanism is custom made for the Marcos. Attached to the bracket on the rear axle is a piece of rubber about 2 inches long. Attached to this is a metal bracket which the handbrake cable is connected too. The hand brake cable is then connected to the handbrake lever on the left wheel. There is also a metal rod that goes from the bracket on the piece of rubber to the hand brake lever on the right hand wheel.
I've probably completely confused you by now so the best way to try and explain is for you to see a couple of pictures of the mechanism. If you follow the link below you will find several pictures of the hand brake mechanism on the car I'm currently restoring.
If you need any further information or measurements just let me know.
Cheers,
Adrian
