Serial numbers, where are they?

Serial numbers, where are they?

2008-09-25 by hide809rig169

Motor Vehicle is inspecting my car tomorrow for serial numbers, I know
there is one on the passenge side foot box, but are there any others?
The inspector told me that the number on the foot box was a chassis
number not the VIN! I told him that is what there is. And in the UK
that means car serial number. So tomorrow I go back for another level
of inspection. My car is number 8001, 1982 of course, a tube chassis
car. Where can I find a number if at all? I am in the USA, Arizona.
Oh, he also told me, looks like a gray market car (no kidding) and I
might have to find a company to bring it up to federal safety and
emissions specs. I told him, it was legal in Ohio and Georgia, and
the car was brought from the UK in parts (a kit car, I know a bad word
to Marcos owners) the reply was, that doesn't make it legal in
Arizona, I was nice, no argument or reasoning, I go back tomorrow.
Where are the serials numbers? Any one been through this before?
Thanks for the help, Steve Vukobratovich

Steve,

I do not think there are any other ID or VIN plates other than the one
attached to the passenger footwell in the engine compartment. You may
need to show your inspector the physical title to the car so they know
there are no other numbers listed. Do you have copies of the old titles
or some other history you could present?
Good luck.

Steve

My Marcos #5916 a 1971 was registered in Arizona for many years, and it when
through the state DMV inspection centers with out a problem. The 1982 year
may be your problem, several of the kit cars in California are being built
with older engines to get them titled pre California year requirements for
emissions testing.

I don't think there are any other numbers on the car. The federal safety is
a bigger problem than the emissions (the car is just too low for bumpers and
cash zones) to be redesigned into the car. I would look into the custom
build class (hot rods etc.).

Good Luck!

Steve,
On the earlier cars, The serial no. is steel stamped on the left hand forward frame rail close to the upper shock mount (usually just forward of the weldment) and written on the dash sub-facia along with the original colour (if painted at the factory). All these nos. should match the data plate on the pedal box cover.

Steve,
Larry told me where to look for my 1970 car, and I located my numbers on the panel behind the dash face, as well as the original color. Remove the speedo, and look through the hole to see the writing. Mine did not have the frame rail stamps though. Rory later confirmed the numbers, and sent a new serial plate with heritage documentation.

If you still have the original 4 speed gear box and overdrive fitted you may also find the chassis serial number stamped on the gearbox cross member. The issue is you have to unbolt the cross member and remove the rubber mount to see it. Also if you cross member is quite badly corroded you might not be able to see the numbers anymore.
