Hi All,
While the subject of brakes is still fresh in our minds, I have a
burning question.
Does everyone have a single reservoir master cylinder for their brakes?
If so, is it bigger or the same size as the clutch master cylinder.
If not, please describe what you have. I will be rebuilding my brake
system in the future and would love to put a dual reservoir master
cylinder in place of the single unit.
 
Oh... and does anyone know what applications (GT6, MG, etc.) the master
cylinders came from?

I looked in my spares and all I have is 7/8" and 1" rubber seals.  My 
rear brake cylinders are 3/4" also.  Any foreign auto parts store 
should have Girling kits.  I ended up getting Volvo kits at the local 
shop.  Just have them look up brake kits and get a 3/4" one.  The 
seals are all about the same.  I used a brake master cylinder 3/4" 
seal to replace my clutch slave cylinder seal?!

Good luck!  Hope you can make Davis show on Saturday.

When I had my car prepared for shipping to Canada back in 1976, the car was
retrofitted with a dual brake master cylinder and lines to comply with
Canadian specs. It was much bigger than the clutch one. If I recall
correctly, the front left brake was paired with the rear right, and the
front right with the rear left. Following the complete factory rebuild in
1981 due to the fire in late 1978, the dual system was replaced by a single
system for some reason, which I didn't notice until the car was back in
Canada and it was too late to have it corrected. However the single brake
master cylinder is still significantly larger than the clutch one, and the
tremendous braking performance was unaffected.
 
On another subject, I was crawling under my car last weekend checking things
out after reinstalling the engine and gearbox following an overdrive
rebuild, and noticed that a few areas of the dreaded rust had appeared under
the sills on the bottom members, a little further forward behind the front
wheel and in front of the rear wheel. Knowing how much effort is required to
replace rusted out members, I intend taking corrective action as soon as I
can find the time. However, thinking ahead to preempt problems in this area,
I came across a paint called POR15 a few years ago that was advertised as
rust inhibiting and durable, so durable in fact that it was said that it
could be hit with a hammer without the paint chipping off. I thought I'd try
it out on the badly rusting post and frame that supports my 10' satelite
dish. I used a wire disc attachment for my electric drill to removed the
surface rust and then gave it one coat of the paint. After 3 years of
exposure to rain, snow and ice, the finish has not deteriorated, so I feel
very confident that the paint will work very well on my chassis. In fact it
states on the can that it is ideal as car chassis paint. If anyone intends
to try it, you should take care to purchase the version that is not
sensitive to ultra violet light. The one I have dries to a semigloss black,
though I think it is now available in other colours. It isn't cheap at
CAN$56 a litre but it does a great job.

Jeff,

My car has a single master cylinder for the brakes.  The bore is 3/4".
The clutch master cylinder is also 3/4" bore but has a smaller fluid
reservoir.  As far as applications I'm not sure but I had a previous
post in which I gave a bunch of URLs' for replacement parts and new
cylinders.  Search for "master" I guess.

Once again I'll say (as Mark Saxby did), the stainless brake hoses are
the best investment so far!

Hi Paul,
Wow, I guess Marcos just has a thing for single reservoir master
cylinders. That's just odd!
I wonder if they put those on the newer cars as well?
 
Regarding the POR15, please let us know how this works on the chassis. I
have thought about doing the exact same thing to the rusty bits on mine,
but haven't gotten around to it yet. (Another of those future projects!)

seals are all about the same. I used a brake master cylinder 3/4"
seal to replace my clutch slave cylinder seal?!

Regarding the POR15, please let us know how this works on the chassis. I
have thought about doing the exact same thing to the rusty bits on mine,
but haven't gotten around to it yet. (Another of those future projects!)

When I had my car prepared for shipping to Canada back in 1976, the car
was retrofitted with a dual brake master cylinder and lines to comply
with Canadian specs. It was much bigger than the clutch one. If I recall
correctly, the front left brake was paired with the rear right, and the
front right with the rear left. Following the complete factory rebuild
in 1981 due to the fire in late 1978, the dual system was replaced by a
single system for some reason, which I didn't notice until the car was
back in Canada and it was too late to have it corrected. However the
single brake master cylinder is still significantly larger than the
clutch one, and the tremendous braking performance was unaffected.
 
On another subject, I was crawling under my car last weekend checking
things out after reinstalling the engine and gearbox following an
overdrive rebuild, and noticed that a few areas of the dreaded rust had
appeared under the sills on the bottom members, a little further forward
behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel. Knowing how much
effort is required to replace rusted out members, I intend taking
corrective action as soon as I can find the time. However, thinking
ahead to preempt problems in this area, I came across a paint called
POR15 a few years ago that was advertised as rust inhibiting and
durable, so durable in fact that it was said that it could be hit with a
hammer without the paint chipping off. I thought I'd try it out on the
badly rusting post and frame that supports my 10' satelite dish. I used
a wire disc attachment for my electric drill to removed the surface rust
and then gave it one coat of the paint. After 3 years of exposure to
rain, snow and ice, the finish has not deteriorated, so I feel very
confident that the paint will work very well on my chassis. In fact it
states on the can that it is ideal as car chassis paint. If anyone
intends to try it, you should take care to purchase the version that is
not sensitive to ultra violet light. The one I have dries to a semigloss
black, though I think it is now available in other colours. It isn't
cheap at CAN$56 a litre but it does a great job.

I didn't realise it was so long ago that I mentioned I was going to paint my
chassis with POR15. It's been a busy summer but I finally finished painting
the vulnerable parts of my chassis a couple of weeks ago. Considering the
chassis is now 22 years old, it was in remarkably good shape. The rust I
mentioned earlier was only on the surface of the chassis members and was
easily removed with a wire wheel attachment on my electric drill. My
previous chassis, which was replaced during the 1980 rebuild following a
fire in 1978, had holes in the sill members and the trailing members under
the trunk. I was quite annoyed at the time because the car was only 6 years
old but since I got it back, it has hardly ever been driven in bad weather.
The paint went on very easily, set as hard as a rock and looks great. I'm
hoping I won't have to touch it again if the paint lives up to its
reputation. It'll be interesting to see how well it holds up.
