Ok, I'm strongly considering making my own mellotron. I have extensive expertise in mechanics, motion control (see robotics.com), and audio electronics (see synthesizers.com). Considering using a constantly spinning loop tape and have a voltage controlled envelope generator for each key. Maybe even a VCF and a couple of LFOs for amplitude and freq modulation. Would be a great 'sampler' addition for a modular synth. Also, the unit would be able to record sounds (but you would have to record each key). Might as well do midi out too since that's already designed - could be used to trigger external effects. Yes, it would have a sound all it's own due to the differences in design. I always offer for sale what I design/build for myself. I like the tron cabinet so I'd stick with something like that. Could offer it in kit form to help in mfg and shipping costs although that scares me a bit. Target price $3k. Anyone interested? I never take $ until I have products done so you don't have to worry about a scam. Projected design time: 9-12 months. OR... someone can find me a tron and I can move along :) Roger synthesizers.com
