'Tron hate...

2005-04-22 by Jack Younger

Hello again,
I love to watch the fur fly! Scathing commentary! It's funny, one can liken a
Mellotron to a beloved pet or child. Stories of abuse bring fierce and bileous
retribution on the offender.
One could argue (although I'm not one to do so, so please don't crack the
whip) that the 'tron is simply a machine, a thing. I, for one, could never, after
all the work, toil and love dumped into the ridiculous box, consider mine
anything other than a kind of grail of sound.
I have a friend as well, who swears by the sample. He also swears by
protools and I, in turn, swear at him, as a result. At one point, during a heated
analog vs digital argument, of which we seem to have an unending supply, I
mentioned recently aquiring my EMI. He came over with his infernal laptop
and we set to comparing the two through my studio's monitors. To his
embarassment, the real thing won, of course. More body and dynamics. The
samples were flat and grainy, while the EMI seemed to breathe the notes forth
like surging ocean waves. We have not argued about such things since.
Mellotron - 1, Sampletank - 0.
I hope to make a few of my more Mellotron-oriented albums available by
MP3 shortly, so that I may enjoy the spit and daggers of opinion, as well. The
reviews from this group are always so refreshingly raw and unabashed.
That's all for now. The Bastard EMI (#103) is currently awaiting more parts,
keys as straight and soft as the best trouser-crease, I'm proud to say. Much
thanks to Markus for his brilliant guidance. I will post a link on my new site
with before, during and after pics in the summer, upon it's glorious completion.
Cheers!
