Short form: When I was married, the house next door to ours came up for sale, cheap, and we bought it so I could have real studio space. My ex decided to redecorate and repaint. The house was older and had a gas floor-furnace for heat. She wanted to paint the walls, and laid dropcloths which were big, heavy old polyester curtains, along the walls to cover the carpet. She covered the floor furnace with one of the curtains. Sometime in the overnight hours, the floor furnace kicked on. The curtain on it burned slowly, and like a fuse, lit all of the other ones in the room, melting them and the carpet together into a crackly, smelly black mass. The house was tightly closed up, and what little active fire there was extinguished itself, but the smoldering of the polyester curtains and the carpet they were covering filled the house with acrid black smoke, still hanging in the air the next day when I went inside, and all of my equipment was covered with black film, greasy and sticky to the touch. My tech said it would be impossible to guarantee anything would stay working even if he cleaned it all, and his cleaning and repairing would cost as much as replacements. We fought with insurance for several months, and I eventually got all new stuff, total payout for gear was about $28,000, payout for cleaning and repair on the house about $11,000. Insurance company dropped us shortly afterwards. I won't be marrying again. I'm very thankful that I didn't own my Mellotron yet. I'd still be in prison. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Dale" <chris.dale@...> To: "jonesalley" <jonesalley@...>; "Mellotronists" <Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, March 27, 2006 10:00 AM Subject: RE: [Mellotronists] K1r > > > I won't ask how! :) > > > I lost it and all of my other gear by smoke damage > while I was married > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "stevetebble" <stevetebble@...> > To: <Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com> > Sent: Monday, March 27, 2006 3:19 PM > Subject: [Mellotronists] K1r > > >> Yes, that's the one.
