LIVE CONCERTS FROM THE PAST AND PRESENT
CHECK OUT KING CRIMSON AT FILLMORE WEST
LAST CONCERT
WITH ORIGINAL LINE-UP

A note: Some of this material is available on the DGM album "Epitaph", but it sure doesn't sound the same! Well worth a listen, especially in light of the current list discussions. Now here is some mellotron that will make your hair stand on end! If you ever wanted to know exactly what Ian played on mellotron for "Epitaph", here's your chance. (And doesn't the 60 cycle hum from the amps take you back?)

It's also interesting to compare the use of mellotron by KC's original line-up with Pinder's use. The difference couldn't be more apparent here. Same instrument, same tapes, but holy shit. Is it better? I don't know. That's up to you to decide.

Hope you also enjoy Giles' drumming. I don't think there's any drummer who is so wonderfully idiosyncratic -- or brilliant.

Cheers,

Rick

CHOM CHOM CHOM! I remember it even as CKGM. One of my cousins worked for them in the early 70's. Used to get to talk to Aynsley Dunbar when he was DJing. Whatever happened to a cool music subculture like we used to have?

Instant gratification and lowered expectations happened. Every child
wants to be a star NOW - the next hip hop mofo. Very few kids are
willing to take the time or effort to learn to play an instrument. Now
they're the center of attention because they're ... playing records at
a party. Apparently there's some secret skill involved in fading a
mixer between two turntables whilst cupping one side of your headphones
over your left ear with one hand. I can't remember the last time I
was at a party with a live band playing, but it goes back to the '80s.
I guess it wouldn't be so bad if what they were playing was in the least
bit interesting, but everytime I've had to go to one of these damned
things it's the most unimaginative and repetitive bastard son of disco
crap being played. I've often felt that Brando had Sheen call in the
airstrike on the wrong people at the end of Apocalypse Now ...

I disagree, I don't think it's right to blame the kids.

The music media, that conduit through which they take in culture, has
let them down in a big way. Listen to what's out there; there's very
little new music of any substance worth getting excited about.

If this was the early 70's and someone asked you to name some virtuoso
musicians, you could name dozens without hesitation. Today, ask any
kid who follows the music scene to name a single virtuouso musician,
and they'd say, well, they'd say "What does virtuoso mean?". But it's
true; it's really hard to name a single recent musician who's made a
serious statement on their instrument. And without virtuoso musicians
it's very difficult for a kid to find the inspiration to master an
instrument.

The music biz of decades past found talent at the local level and gave
it wider reach, and popular music was thus a reflection of youth
culture. The music biz of the last couple two decades takes input
from focus groups and dictates from above what people hear at the
local level. So the clowns running the popular music biz are
effectively defining youth culture.

(That's quite the claim, Don. Got anything to back it up?)

The has a really weird side effect: note that you almost never see
local bands play their own toons in the style of the stuff that's in
the top forty. Local bands can be found playing jazz, metal, blues,
prog, folk, whatever, but you almost never hear of a local band
playing music that sounds like Britney Spears, N'Sync, Snoop Diddy
Flav, or whoeverthehell is big right now.

By that logic it's impossible for any generation's music to suck
because every generation's music is functionally equivalent. No way,
dude. Look, I fully understand that it's the job of every generation
to piss off the previous generation, and that's completely fine, but
there's a serious problem here, and covering it up with a weird
abstraction is not helping any.

The cool music subculture was effectively killed by a music industry
that was more concerned about making deals than making music. Sure,
the music industry has always been more concerned with making deals
than making music, but the dollar value of the transactions involved
got way out of control.

All is not lost though. It turns out that in the process of killing
the music, the music industry has effectively killed itself. Short
term gain has trashed the chances of long term survival. (Darwin
would say that that sucks if you're an evolving species.)

I'll predict that the music industry we've come to know is turning
into ash, and a whole new music industry is rising from the ashes.

I think that there's still a lot of great new music out there, but
it's very hard to find. All of the alternative FM radio stations and
DJ's have disappeared. Radio stations (that aren't classic rock) are
currently playing The Killers, Green Day and My Chemical Romance until
we all want to barf. I think that these are good bands, but FREQUENT
airplay turns it into disposable music fast.

> it's really hard to name a single recent musician who's made a

True. They are still out there but they are hidden under piles of
shit. We didn't need to hunt and dig for it in the past. The good
non-mainstream stuff WAS easy to find at the store. The competition
for shelf-space in the stores is part of the problem. With DVD's,
video and computer games, tons of old classic rock CD's, there's NO
space for any slow selling new music CD's.

If it's not on the radio and it's not in the stores, then how do you
find it? Searching through piles of shit on the internet?

I subscribe to live365.com where people can set up their own "radio
stations". A lot of "prog" fans have done so and, thanks to them,
I've found a lot of new(er) music that I never knew existed. And
being a fan of old-time radio, there's plenty of that to listen to
as well.

Dave et al,

My interaction with today's youths (through my own children) has shown me that, perhaps, they are nore savvy than previous generations. While I understand that my own children's eclectic tastes stem from me introducing them to a wide vaiety of tastes, I am constantly impressed with their friends wide pallette. Maybe it's the water here in New Jersey. I believe kids have a more balanced musical diet than I ever did growing up. They search the Internet, whether it be Pitchfork.com or browsing CDBaby.com or CMJ. As for today's bands:

 Sufjan Stevens
 Ratatat
 The Notwist
 Lali Puna
 Nickel Creek
 Chris Thile (a virtuoso)
The Flaming Lips (let's here it for the over-40-years-old guys who write lyrics that aren't angry)

If you ever get to hear it, there is a band called Maxwell’s Demon that has a release called ‘Prometheus’ and its got a great selection of ‘tron throughout the album. Aural Moon plays some interesting German, Italian, and French selections (sometimes they are a bit outside my scope of interest). This is my first post and the catalyst for my entry is the discussion of today’s bands being uninspiring and ‘untalented’. I agree that today’s music is dead inside, which is apparent in the lyrics anyway. Its all so angry. Anyway, hello to all! My name is Dave and I’m a ‘Tron addict hoping to own my own number someday.

Mercyless rant? How about this mercyless mega-sentence:

"He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused
musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths,
shit all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who
have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and
years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace
that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an
amazing lifetime as a musician."

I wish Pat Metheny would tell us how he really feels about it.

"And honestly, there is no small amount of envy involved from
musicians who see one of their fellow players doing so well
financially, ..."

Yes, that's more like it.

Fripp phoned me about ten years ago. Among other things, he offered to
sell me the ItCotCK Mellotron Mk II for upwards of 20K-UKP. I politely
declined, having neither the money nor the wish nor the stupidity to do
such a thing.

I can clear this up. In Chicago to perform at the Electric Playground during their first tour, the place got torched overnight by the mob (I'm not kidding) and while their equipment wasn't destroyed, at least one of the two mellotrons KC was carrying got very wet. The road crew and band tried desperately to dry it out with hair dryers (successfully according to Ian), but management and the band thought it best to send over another from Olde Blighty, just in case.

This third mellotron was the one sold to Genesis (although I suspect it might have been the one you could dub "Old Niagara"). In any event KC wound up the tour with THREE MkIIs in tow!

Why exactly do you think that there's a lot of great new music out
there if it's so very hard to find?

I mean, if great music is so hard to find, than you've got a huge
number of potential musicians out there without the inspiration to
develop their talents.

   > All of the alternative FM radio stations and DJ's have
   > disappeared. Radio stations (that aren't classic rock) are

Right. The good news is that while the old music channels have died,
new music channels are opening up. FM radio, as we know it, is
basically dead, and FM radio has never had so much competition, and
that competition is all growing. Satellite radio, interweb radio, an
iPod in shuffle mode, iTunes, podcasts, etc.

At the same time, with FM radio dying, FM radio stations are going to
have an incentive to try alternative business strategies ("What are
you saying, Smithers? You mean, maybe we should *not* be playing crap
all day long?"). Or they'll be sold off to music lovers who can pull
of something better. Witness San Jose's KFOX FM now has a radio show
dedicated to progressive rock music, and it's on 6 nights a week. No
shit, man.

Actually no, the competition for shelf space is no longer an issue.
With Tower Records, Warehouse Records and others going out of
business, shelf space is just not on the map.

Shelf space is being replaced by interweb distribution channels. And
there's this recent economic theory called The Long Tail that shows
that a business can be just as successful selling obscure music as
selling Madonna. Check out this posting in my blog:

Don's Blog, February 19, 2006 -- Check out The Long Tail
  http://www.till.com/blog/archives/2006/02/check_out_the_l.html

Amazon, CDWarehouse, iTunes and the others are all doing just fine.
And they have effectively infinite shelf space.

   > If it's not on the radio and it's not in the stores, then how do
   > you find it? Searching through piles of shit on the internet?

Well... yeah. Interweb-based operations can be very efficent about
recommending similar products. The Amazon "customers who bought this
also bought..." feature, the lists feature, various bulletin boards,
etc.

So yeah, the music industry has been sucking badly, and going downhill
for decades. But right now it's also turning around. We have the
potential of a huge renaissance both artistically and for business
opportunities.

Yeah youre right, there is a shortage of "music" primarily because
our generation is dwindling in numbers. I happen to like "Spocks
Beard" but try finding their catalog in a store. It's real simple,
you do not have the record labels spending money on anything that
sells anymore, like in the 70's. So where do these groups go? the
only outlet they have: the internet. I also happen to like Peter
Hammill, again he hasn't been with a major label in over 20 years,
so the only way you can get his recent work is through an
independent source via internet. Then there is the radio market,
yeah right. Clear Channel dominates the airwaves and all their
stations are formatted the same, with the same national feeds
playing the same rotation all over the countr, BORING!. The part
that made FM aor stand out is that you had individual personalities
that were given a free hand in the mix and the record labels were
giving you more than you could listen to. So demand created supply.
Now thanks to high tech, the well is almost dry. Ask yourself this.
If Genesis were to go on tour(the three core members) tomorrow, do
you think they would sell out the large venues like they did in the
80's? I don't think so. So demand has shrunk the supply. The record
labels merely fell victim to the times, and if it wasn't for selling
their catalogs, they already would be just a memory. The music
business used to be a very personal thing in every aspect and that
too is gone, just look what Ahmet Ertigun did when he ran
Atlantic. Music is an art form and flourishes on creativity, and
when you take that out of the equation, it is doomed. So the best
we can hope for is hanging on to what we have and hope we survive
the next wave. (retro) Doug M400 #703 (unsigned)
