I heard somewhere that refurbishing Mellotrons is a fruitless effort

You are correct sir! Luckily, I have two new fruitless efforts on  their way. 
So until my M4000 shows up I can continue to pursue useless endeavors  and 
pass on arcane information to those who will suffer it.
