strange Phillips keyboards

2002-09-04 by johnarmes@aol.com

Dear All

I recently had a meeting with a salvage company in Devon England, In a corner i saw a little keyboard .

When I cleared some stuff of it i found it was a Phiilips Phillicorder !!

Any idea what one of these is , is it rare should I buy it or is it just a piece of dutch crap best left in the rubbish dump

Discuss

Regards

John

Hi All!

The Philips Philicorda was (or rather they WERE, because there were several
models...) merely rather duff slightly ecclesiastical sounding transportable
electronic organs designed primarily for use in chapels and small churches.
Most were finished in pale wood cabinets with hearing-aid-beige plastic . If
anyone is interested, I can lay my hands (not in a particularly holy way) on
about 10 of the buggers, all for sale at pocket money prices. Who knows,
they may become trendy. After all, the EDP Wasp was shite in 1980, and
despite having no following when new and still being shite now, seems to
have become collectable. Stylophones too.

CfN!!

Hello John,

Philicordas are not particularly rare, and only of interest if you're a bit of a collector. I got mine, together with a tiny little Leslie, for £60 through the local paper. It's worth saving if it's in excellent condition, but don't pay too much.

Regards,

Gordon.

Hi All!!

Further to Gordon's email, I can probably get hold of a quantity of these
things for between £15 and £25 each!!... Strangely, one of them also has a
cute little Nihon-Leslie (Transistorised) which may be procurable too. JS
has first refusal on this lot, but after him it's first come, first served.
Shipping will be the buyer's problem!... Not sure how well any of them work,
mind!!

What DOES work (though the internal speakers have been disabled and replaced
with a cleaner preamp output) is my WurliTzer EP200A which may be for sale
in the near future.

PS Great article Gordon!!

Colin (et al),

I remember these, hmmm. I think the older ones were based on a novel oscillator that had a neon in it which was pretty in the dark with the covers off!

All the best,
Norm

PS: A bit harsh on the old Wasp, they actually sound reasonable if you bypass the internal speaker. I had one for a bit with the additional seperate 'real' keyboard (Caterpillar!) and sequencer. For recording sessions I would borrow another three from friends and drive all four polyphonically from the keyboard. A working man's Obie 4 voice...

Norm!!

As always, you are too nice.

The wasp sounded like a distressed kitten farting thru an old HMV gramophone horn.

Damn. Wish I had a HMV gramophone horn. Here, kitty kitty kitty...
Last call for the Belgian Mellotron - auction ends in thirty minutes, price holding steady at $1675.00 USD.
