Greetings Gang,  I too enjoyed those surf-beach-songs before
my Mellotronic awakening in late 1960's.  Happily recalled the times
when swimming at the NJ shore or Lake Hopatcong to the music
of Beach Boys and Jan/Dean.


This carried-thru into 2004 when visiting San Diego.
I quietly hummed the tune "Surfin' USA" upon seeing the Pacific Ocean
first time ever at La Jolla beach.   Thanks for the guided tour Frank!


Did anyone also consider  (based upon Jon's statement above,
that some of these guys got whacked upside the head with a surfboard
when "Hanging-10 ?"  Could be the reason.   Lee , you're an avid
surf-guy.  Your thoughts on this ?

Speaking of surf music (I'm also a fan), would the Surf Punks be 
considered an authentic surf band?

Yeah, it was. Jan was seriously brain damaged after that. I saw them years  
later in a club in DC and it was sad... but also thrilling to see Jan trying so

Yeah Tony...it was Jan and Dean...song was loosely based on Jan's own 
experience in his sports car in So. Cal.
It was Dean who sang the lead on Barbara Ann. (Wilson could't give 
him credit though...because he was not suppose to be crossing record 
labels...he was at the party when the party lp was recorded.)
My brother and I had a High School surf band in Vegas.  We were on of 
three real popular Friday night dance bands on the Vegas High School 
circuit, the othere two being, the MIsty Souls (Stones Cover Band), 
and the Misty Souls (top 40 band)
We were the Outcasts,  
To answer the other questions about brain damage or getting waqcked 
with a board... or do you need to be mentally stable to play in a 
surf band...yeah, I got hit by my own board a few times...and I don't 
think I suffered any major brain damage,...if you will... excuse me 
for a moment,,,I need to answer some questions from those voices 
inside my head...and yeah Jonesally...it is chance  there 
is "scientific correlation" and you hit the board right on the head.
and bty...there is some tron violins on Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean 
Blue.

Brian was/(is) a genius willing to push into new territory - but he wasn't
exactly single-handed as far as studios.They recorded most of their work,
including Pet Sounds, at United Western, 6000 Sunset Blvd. in Studio 3, the
smallest of the rooms there. This was the best set of recording studios in
the Western US - most 'Best Engineering' Grammys of any studio. My drummer
was carpenter and house second there for years. We had the privilege to do
some recording there - wow... I just heard that it changed hands a couple of
times in recent years and the newest owner went into foreclosure - it is now
completely gutted - all the rooms are stripped down to bare walls - R.I.P.

  Brian Wilson's work in '65 and '66, as an arranger, songwriter, producer
and studio performer is so far above anything anyone else was doing,
including all my english heroes, that it boggles the mind. Maybe that's the
brain damage referenced.

  It took 4 Beatles, George Martin, and the best studio in England to create
their albums while Brian created Pet Sounds and Smile pretty much single
handed. Those two albums make everyone else's work look like high school
amateur productions. Okay, so Smile wasn't an album at the time, probably
because the effort of trying to drag his band and family into such brilliant
new terrain was so painful and the public and record company seemed to want
more cheap songs about girls, cars and surfing. And who the hell said that
the lyrics to "Surf's Up" were inane?! Why, it's impressionistic poetry of a
high level, a Monet level if you insist, that perfectly dovetails with the
music and production.

 The Beatles did get a chance to hear the Smile sessions in late '66, it's a
shame the rest of the world did not. "Revolver" and "Pepper" might not have
happened without Brian's influence and sure would have been received
differently if they stood beside Smile.    

  I wish I could be listening to Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue".
