OK - just out of curiosiy here...

Just how many pre-'Strawberry Fields' recordings feature the Mellotron?
I suspect a raft of them, but I really can't think of any right now
aside from Graham Bond.

I think that Days of Future Past was recorded in early 1966. The SFF
Mellotron track was recorded in November 1966. Maybe they were both
released about the same time.

Days of Future Past didn't use the tron. That was recorded with a live orchestra. It was the next album "Search for the Lost Chord" where they needed a substitute, and if I remember correctly that is where they first used it. The story I read was that they producer, Tony Clarke, was supposed to record kind of a demo album with the orchestra, and instead he and the Moody Blues came up with Days of Future Past, recorded it, then laid it on the desk at Derum Records and said, "Oh by the way, here is the bill."

Surely the Orchestra was just used for the tacky bits between songs to
give the impression of a "concept album"? "Nights in White Satin" is
just one of the tracks on this album which sure as hell used Tron. No
orchestra worth its members' union fees would play that badly.

The gentleman's history is incorrect. The Moodies did use the Mellotron on
Days. The orchestra was overdubbed after the Moodies recorded their stuff.
After Days, they used no orchestra, just the Mellotron even more.

I for one would prefer it if it had no syrupy orchestra on it. Tron all
the way, baby!

Early Recordings

2003-02-13 by mellotrongirl <mellotrongirl@hotmail.com>

Makes one wonder who the first bands and musicians were that actually
bought the pricey cumbersome units & called them their own. The
majority of them in the mid 1960's went to recording studios and
never really were marketed as music instrument store items, am I
correct? Some early records by the Hollies, Bee Gees, Rolling Stones,
Eyes Of Blue, Pretty Things, etc. were only a year or two after
Strawberry Fields Forever...but it seems The Beatles used 'tron a
time or two prior to SFF...????

I've heard it rumoured that 'tron might have been used on Tomorrow Never
Knows - parts of the backing tapes they used there do sound a lot like some
sort of heavily-treated MKII brass but I'm completely guessing there...

The Hollies? What in particular?
