Julian Cope

2003-02-26 by Glenn Robertson

My first experience of Julian was on the BBC Radio 2 'tron documentary I made available to the list a while back. After only hearing the 10 or so seconds of 'Land of fear' I tried to find out what album it was on.
As look would have it while I was in the town centre looking for it, the local theatre had posters up advertising his show. The poster advertised "floresant Mellotrons", so guess what I did? I booked.
Having only know about Julian as somebody who used to be in Teardrop Explodes, I had no idea what to expect.
Pride of place on stage, and with an Apple Mac monitor sat on top of it, was what I'd come to see. Though I was expecting a painted 'tron, not day glow paper stappled onto it!!!!!!!!!!
As I say, not knowing Julian from God at the time, I didn't know if he was going to play the song or not.
Then he introduced the 'tron as one of the first samplers, stood infront of it and for minuets I was in Heaven.
It was the most pure thing I'd ever seen. Seen him twice since. The guy is a true God.

On the Cope website - Q&A ... two Mellotrons are listed with his
favorite instruments....

"...My two Mellotron 400s are in constant use because I have a bunch
of tapes which no one else has. I bought three tape-frames from
Tangerine Dream in 1995 (3 sounds per frame) and they will keep me
going forever. The Mellotrons need a lot of servicing, but they're
far more roadworthy than rock'n'roll legend makes you think...."

There is a picture from the 2000 tour with 400 in the background.
