it lives!

it lives!

Hi all!
Been busy with other projects and being a lurker of late, but something interesting has come to my attention that I wanted to share.
It seems that the rebirth of prog-flavored mainstream pop is finally starting. If you haven't encountered a band called Evanescence ( www.evanescence.com ) yet, check them out. Their debut album, "Fallen" has already hit platinum status, largely based on the single called "Bring Me to Life" which was used in the movie "Daredevil" earlier this year. A four-piece band, they consist of a female vocalist and a guitarist who are the formative members of the band, and they have added another guitarist and a drummer to the roster in the last year.
The album features a lot of prominently mixed keyboards, predominantly piano and string parts, some real and some clearly keyboard strings, "Mellotronish" in nature, with a David Hodges being given credits for keyboards, arranging, and programming. Google turns up no information related to him other than the Evanescence connection, but the parts are really nicely done, particularly on the big hit song. Lots of dissonance in the string lines, and a tremendously fun part to play.
My own band has just added the song to our setlist, as we have a lot of strong similarities in overall sound to that of Evanescence, and I find it very comforting that a band from just around the corner from me in the Wichita, Kansas area (they hail from Little Rock, Arkansas) with such a proggy, keyboard-laden, and slightly goth feel to it is doing so well.
It seems that the mainstream prog rebirth I've been expecting for so long just may be occurring in, of all places, the Great Plains of the United States.
Any info from anybody here about the band, the keyboardist, or the POSSIBLE use of Mellotron here and there on the album?

Well, never heard of 'em before, but due to the wonders of filesharing, I should be able to give 'em a listen before long. Thanks for the tip!

Beware! The net seems to be flooded with maliciously damaged copies of
their stuff. The record companies are starting to play rough!

Thanks for the warning, Bob. The version I downloaded has a couple of
glitches, but then, so do most full album MP3s. The copy of 'Wonderwall
Music' I found has the original album in perfect quality, then instead of
the bonus tracks, has a bunch of tedious jazz stuff stuck on the end.
Perplexing.

Well, I found a copy, and it's actually not at all bad, although the ballads are pretty lame. They use 'beats' (as I believe they're referred to), but plenty of decent keyboard stuff, with aggressive guitar and good female vocals. Bit of a stylistic mish-mash, but I've heard an awful lot worse. Certainly no Mellotron, but as Jon says, quite a bit of strings/choir-type keys.

Hello,

Just got back from a car trip from New Jersey (my home) to North Carolina,
USA. Forgot CD's, so was stuck with the radio, and it is such a wasteland
(except for the Pentecostal religious shows which are quite entertaining!)

I heard the band Jon is referring to in his post ("Evanescence.") It
appears that they have a big hit, as I heard it many times on various
stations.
The song is quite good, probably (at least for this week) the nicest thing
I've heard in many years. There appears to be mellotron sounds on this.
Don't know whether it is real, or samples, but I don't really care (one of
MY pet peeves is people getting "hung up" over whether the tron is "real" or
not.) Sounds real good to me. I wish them well.

Now for the composers in the audience, and pondering from the experiences of
this car trip...Did anyone ever think of taking a Pentecostal sermon,
recording it, and writing a song around the rhythms provided by the
preacher? Now that could be a varying odd time signature prog rock classic,
at least rhythmically, as far as I know.

Best regards,

Roc
