I suppose that I should let everyone know what's going on here. For now, it
looks like there will be no "Son of Rime..." CD. The songs are still
available for downloading from the tronsounds website, as they have been from the
beginning. Several problems have come up this year which lead me to this
conclusion. They are (in no particular order):

1) Lack of sufficient material. We really need more tunes to choose from,
but I haven't received anything in a long time.

2) Loss of our source of CD production. One of our list members had
originally offered to produce free copies of the CD in a professional CD production
facility where he worked. Unfortunately, he has changed jobs and can no longer
offer this service.

3) ISP problems with the tronsounds web site. This year, the two owners of
my ISP decided to battle each other for control of the business, leaving me
and hundreds of other users with an unreliable service. The web site was down
for months and remains unreliable. The procedure for updating the website
has changed, and I'm no longer sure how to update it. I would like to switch to
a new ISP, but I have prepaid for a year, and can't really afford to switch.

4) Personal issues. I have worked on this project and the website during my
spare time. Some of you who know me better are aware of the fact that 2003
has been a very challenging year for me, particularly the last couple of
months. Something had to give, and unfortunately, this was it.

I started this project as a way that the members of the Mellotronists list
could share their original Mellotron material with each other, and that part has
been successful. I know (from looking at the web stats) that people all over
the world have been downloading these songs from the tronsounds web site. I
have really enjoyed many of the songs which have been submitted (including
"Asia C"). I wish that we had more tunes and the production capability to provide
free CDs for everyone, as was originally intended.

Who knows what the future will bring? I'll try to keep the website up, if I
can, so that we can continue to hear the tunes, at least. Anyone can burn a
CDR from the tunes that are out there, if they want.

I hope that answers the questions regarding "Son of Rime...". I haven't
totally given up on it, but please don't expect anything other than what is
already on the web site. Thanks for the interest, and thanks especially to those of
you who have submitted something. At least your tunes are being heard.

I certainly hope that I didn't come across as being critical that the "Son Of
Rime...." project hadn't seemed to advance in the last 18 months. Lord
knows that Systems Theory hasn't exactly been moving very fast either!
Since more material can be used, we'll submit another track to the pool
sometime in January out of the extras hanging around from the three years
it's taken to get the Systems Theory album together. After that, maybe we
could structure a tree arrangement to get CDDA quality copies of the "Son
Of Rime..." material into people's hands. I have extensive experience doing
that for the amjt newsgroup a few years back. It's a bit of organization but
with a few hands available with CD-R burners to do a few each, and some
downloadable jpegs made by a tron-friendly artist, it can be done to very
nice quality standards.

it sounds like you have a legitimate gripe with your isp, and that they
have not met their side of your hosting contract. i can get you a nice
package for $10 a month, and you should be able to get a refund from your
current ISP without using an attorney. read your agreement carefully for
their obligations and the terms for you to get out of it...
cheap hosting is too easy to find for a company to treat customers badly.

i hope 2004 is a bettter year for you and everyone else.
lord knows 2003 has been hard on lots of people.

...jeff

ps: happy new year everyone. have a safe and healthy one.

No, that's not the way I took it. I just wanted to let people know what's
going on with the project (and the web site), especially those who have
submitted a tune.

At least one other member has offered assistance to burn some CDs for members
of the list who would want one. Maybe we can discuss this further and come
up with a solution. That would be a nice way to start off the New Year.
Speaking of which, I'd like to wish all of the Troniacs out there a Happy New Year!

Lord:

Why does the "son of Rime" material need to be original compositions?
If we opened it up to cover versions, we would have a lot more
material to choose from. Are you planning on releasing /
distributing this CD? I can deal with the royalty issue.
