A question - who on the list has owned their Mellotron the longest?
I note that at least a couple of people are at the thirty-year mark,
does anybody beat that?

While driving home from our show last night during a tornadic storm
outbreak in my area, I had my local radio station on for weather
updates. I caught about the last half of a song that was stated to
date from 1969 by a band called "Neon Philharmonic." It had sort of
a pop-prog, kind of an "American" Moodies feel to it, with a little
of that "Love is Blue" vibe, and strings that were at times very
Mellotronish and at times clearly real. I don't recall ever having
heard them or of them before. Can anybody fill in the blanks on
that, particularly the possibility of some early rock Mellotron use?

The name (Neon Philharmonic) rings a vague bell, but I can't remember any
details. Here's a link to some info about this group; assuming it's the
same Neon Philharmonic.

I was put onto the Neon Philharmonic single by someone, but after
downloading and lsitening to it, I was pretty convinced there was no
'Tron/Chamby on board. Interesting song, though!

Okay, another trivia question: what sound is Pinder using in "Legend of a Mind" on the "dee-dee-dee-deedle-dee-dee-dee, dee-dee-dee-deedle-dee-dee-daa" Mellotron part?
(Sorry for the technical terminology...)

THAT is the same sound that I hear in the intro and quiet verses of "Tuesday Afternoon" which I keep being told is 3violins!

Well, Jon, I think it's trumpet. Check out this page
<http://mellotron.com/soundframe.htm> from Kean's site. Listen to the
trumpet sound and see what you think.

The stock Mark II may not have had a solo trumpet lead sound, but Pinder
could certainly have done it.

You may be right about Tuesday Afternoon, although there may have been
some blending going on. The Mark II often gives sounds a distinctive
attack that makes lots of different sounds sound similar. It may be that
effect that that you're hearing too.

Hi, Jon.

No, it's definitely Tenor Sax - Station 2, Track 3 (3 violins/MkII
Brass/Tenor Sax). For years I thought this might be muted brass, esp. on Tuesday
Afternoon; however, I discovered this was not so playing Justin Mayer's MkII, and
subsequently my samples, and ultimately my own MkII with Pinder's own tapes
(before my custom tapes were installed); and even on my custom tapes!

Hi Jon,

Yep, the 'Tuesday Afternoon' sounds are most definitely Tenor Sax and
MkII 3-violins together, sometimes playing in unison (as in the
intro), and other times playing their own parts separately as in the
verses. Having recently installed new tapes on my machine with Tenor
Sax on one track, I played a snippet of that intro (quelle surprise!)
in the same key/same octave and it was unmistakeable.

Regarding the "dee-dee-dee-deedle-dee-dee-dee, dee-dee-dee-deedle-dee-
dee-daa" part in 'Legend Of A Mind', on listening to it again I
suspect it might be either MkII smooth Organ or Italian Accordian,
though I'm slightly more inclined to think that it's the latter.
