Hello and a question

Hello and a question

2004-05-25 by tmoravan

Hello, Tom Moravansky here from Maryland. Finally picked up a 400
last week (#1342). Got it mostly cleaned up and working, still need
a few key adjustments, but it sounds great. Interesting to see some
of the same folks from other esoteric lists here as well.

OK - I need to ask a question. I ran a number of searches across the
message base with no results. I tried scanning every message header
(4700+) looking for this, but couldn't find it, so I'm going to ask.

Has anyone compared tapes from Mellotron.com and Streetly? In
general, do folks have a preference? If this has been discussed,
please give me something to search on and I'll go away and read and
be quiet.

Thanks

To avoid yet another flame war....I will answer this
one to Tom privately. I would hope that we can all at
least agree on that. No sense in hurting feelings or
drawing up ranks again.

best,

Mark.

Hello, Tom. Welcome to Mellotroniacs Anonymous. I'm Ken.

Cool! I noticed nobody congratulated you, Tom, so I will! Enjoy your new
purchase and good luck! :-)

Mellotrons *esoteric*? Hmmmm...I don't know whether to be offended or
not. Isn't that a nice way to say "screwball"?

>Has anyone compared tapes from Mellotron.com and Streetly?

I hinted at an answer to this a while ago, if I recall, and in a very nice
way, buried in another post. Somehow we avoided Armageddon, and the world
went on.

Yeah, there are somewhat controversial subjects out here. The top 2 deal
with Watcher (#1: Which Mellotron and/or Hammond and/or banging a rock
together sounds were used; #2: What are the REAL notes that were
played). #3 actually gets to the machines themselves. The answer is, of
course, that we have some folks in the UK who do a fine job at what they do
and are committed to their craft and we have folks in Canada/Sweden who do
a fine job at what they do and are committed to their craft. For those of
us who own machines we're pretty lucky that all these guys do what they
do. And we are very fortunate to have a great bunch of folks out here who
actually CARE enough to have opinions about these cantankerous boxes and
share their experiences with everyone else, as loopy as those experiences
may be---and who flatly refuse to let that Mellotron legacy die.

And after the usual flame wars, we then get all hell-bent over...

- Guinness vs. Murphy's
- Powder vs. liquid
- Pokemon vs. Digimon
- Viagra vs. Levitra
- Levitra vs. Cialis
- Old Darren vs. new Darren

Thanks for the warm welcome all around.

My comment does deserve a bit more info. In particular, I saw some
folks on here that are also owners/listmembers of another British
product - the Notron MIDI sequencer. Virtually opposite ends of the
music spectrum. Given that there's only 2000+ Mellotrons and a
couple hundred Notrons in existence, the overlap is probably small.

Thanks for all the private replies. I do agree that it's wonderful
that the Mellotron is currently being supported by not 1, but 2
different groups and we can all benefit from that support (speaking
as an owner of many synths whose manufacturers are long gone).

Fine w. me - I'll stay out of that since I love listening to Genesis
and other stuff but have no desire to recreate it in any way.

I 'retired' from Analogue Heaven and other lists because of the
constant flamewars. I won't intentionally start one here.

Hi Tom!

>Thanks for the warm welcome all around.

Heh, I tried, but please be aware that the remainder of my post was largely
tongue-in-cheek. In no way was it intended to smack anyone, just be
humorous. What, nobody liked the way I worked the "Old Darren vs. New
Darren" thing in? Oh, I suppose you all thought "Al Quaeda vs. Hezbolah"
was funnier! (Uhh, actually, I think it was...)

No offense taken about the whole "esoteric" thing (it's apt, actually), and
World War IV isn't going to start before the current World War is over in
about 20 years just because someone may not think that Hammond bass pedals
were used on Watcher. I'm glad you're here and that everyone else is so we
can share our 'tron stories with other people who have been bitten by the
bug. #805 *may* be having a preamp issue (could just be a loose connection
somewhere, rotting cabling, or even the mixer, no diagnosis done yet) so I
may need some assistance at some point if my Fluke won't do the trick, so
I'm glad yet another resource is out here.

We tend to squelch flame wars anyway---they've been discussed to death, and
our good moderator steps in when he needs to, thankfully.

So...Welcome. :-)

...kl...
M400 #805 - warms up, fades away....power off/on....ok again...
M400 #1037 - actually offended by "esoteric"---prefers "distinctive"
