"Anthem" on Book of Taleisyn is a fine tune too!

I recall reading in the bio for the double LP on Warner's USA that
comedian Bill Cosby was one of three who founded the Tetragrammaton
record label, and thus launched Deep Purple in its infancy here in
the States around 1968. Their first three Stateside releases were on
that label...others were on it also--off the top of my head I recall
a lame LP by Biff Rose.

Interesting 'Purple plan on touring through Russia all the way east
to Vladivostok. They're somewhat famous for cutting their tours
short due to dissention within the Group. Let's see that happen out
on the trans-Siberian railroad with c-c-cold weather on the way.
Blackmore's latest chamber music line-up just wrapped up a handful
of former Easter Bloc nations, and the former Soviet Union. I don't
know what to think of Blackmore's latest music direction...chamber
music gone Abba? I wish they'd go back to Fireball/In Rock era stuff.
Black Night was such a powerhouse tune...I wonder why it wasn't
released on LP until eons later.

Getting back to record labels with a dominant band...think of
Threshold with the Moody Blues. Then you see a handful of albums by
Trapeze, and a Providence elpee on the same label. So...was
Threshold a record label owned by the Moodies?

From what I recall about Threshold, yes it was a label started by the
Moodies so that they could retain possession of both their master tapes and
publishing.

The objective was to prevent them from being screwed (again) by record
company fineprint as they had experienced first time around with the "Go Now
era " Denny Laine led version of the band. They supposedly lost all their
money via expenses, and had determined to own their own label and play the
stock market regularly - something the hippies of the time found
questionable and rejected them for despite the music.

The other idea behind Threshold was to promote bands signed to their label
and help the underdog so to speak.
" Live hand in hand and together we'll stand on the Threshold Of A Dream
  - sound familiar??

Perhaps not that much different from what the Beatles originally intended
Apple to be. Of course, both labels now are little more than one room
offices that administer the business ends for both bands.

Well at least he did SOMETHING noteworthy. It kinda makes up for all of
that unfunny, hesitant, lazy stand-up, and the pollution of TV screens
worldwide with his dull sit-'com', ameliorated only by a snappy theme
tune and the delightful Ms.Bonet........ zzzzzzzzzzz

Sweet!

Anyone aware of the fact that the Moodies were originally formed to
attract the attention of Midlands Brewers, Mitchell's and Butler's
(M&B) as a touring band primarily for M&B's pub network? Presumably to
gain a wedge of sponsorship cash.

Resisting the Brewery's suggestion that they should be called something
'corporate' such as "The M&B Showband" or "The M&B Five" they kept the
M&B in their name and became the "Moody Blues Five".

Would never happen these days, although I can think of a couple of
Midlanders who would relish such a thing.......
