Questions!

2004-10-25 by sundaramusic

For the mellotron owners in this group(sadly I aint one of em!):

1) what do you love about your mellotron(s)?

2) what do you hate about your mellotron(s)?

Bonus question:

3) can white mellotron's sing the blues?

best wishes

1) The sound - not just strings/choir/whatever, but the warmth and presence
of the machine's circuitry/replay mechanism, whatever tapes are loaded.
2) Its appearance (on a good day, though whether for me or it I'm not sure).
3) The way those 'in the know', of all ages, look impressed and say "Love to
try it".
4) The way it pisses off modern gear freaks, who mutter stuff about "Just
use samples", or "Why d'you want that sound anyway?".

> 2) what do you hate about your mellotron(s)?

1) The amount of maintenance required, partic.as I'm not the world's
greatest technician.
2) Its weight, and the difficulty in moving it for recording/gigs etc.
3) The space it takes up in my flat.
4) The way I have to battle until I'm blue in the face to get bands to let
me use it (sometimes - current outfit excepted).

No, despite Blue Weaver's best attempts on the 'Rime' CD.

Just to add - there's something fundamentally different about playing my
Mellotron than any other synth/keyboard I have (including the B-3,
CS-80, etc). It's feels more like an instrument, or more alive
somehow.

I have my Tron sitting on a pair of appliance moving dollies (I can't
find a decent web pic of it - they are rectangular with 2 sets of
small wheels and an adjustable length) so I can slide it out of it's
space to change tape frames easily. Plus the slight extra elevation
leaves enough space for the Ernie Ball volume pedal to slide right
under it when not in use.

Pretty much the same, except:

5) her (wooden) smell... mmmmm, really love that.
6) The touch and look of the keys (her pretty little wooden keys).
7) That woaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii !!!!!! ;)
8) The smiles of my friends when I play an extended Cm/diminished chord on the string section tape at a very high level (Dracula rules! :P).

5) um... only three sounds... I don't really like changing the tapes between songs :P.
6) I could equip my house with a full band studio(basses, guitars, keyboards, drums) with the price of my baby.
