is this the machine that's in tel-aviv, & all over the rockfour albums?
played, at least, by one noam rapaport. anyone who likes the byrds, the beatles,
brian wilson or the dukes of stratosphear ought to give rockfour a spin. there's
even a hint of neil finn about some of the songwriting.
I saw them in london at the end of 2003- charming chaps. the singer (eli) had
auditioned unsuccessfully to be the hebrew voice of spongebob squarepants,
the famous nickelodeon cartoon character, & he was mortified when I brought this
up in front of his bandmates.... I had visited the studio of uzi fox, a
former israeli popstar now running a post-production facility, whilst on a
due-diligence mission on behalf of viacom....

what I DIDN'T know was that rick wright had actually owned the machine.... I
have all the floyd albums up to "animals" (the last one that's not completely
dominated by waters' ego) & they must have switched the 'tron on about three
times in total. there's a fair bit on "atom heart mother", isn't there?

The Floyd had it on 'Saucerful of Secrets' (the appaling 'Seesaw'),
'Ummagumma' (the largely turgid 'Sisyphus' ) and 'Atom Heart Mother'
(towards the end of the title track) I don't think they used it much
else other than on 'Julia Dream'. I have a crackly old BBC session of
them playing 'Saucerful of Secrets' where they use Mk II strings at the
end. Rick Wright never really explored its possibilities all that well,
although I'm not sure that it's exactly suited to their style. I think
he was happier with a Hammond.

Martin may correct me here, but I have the feeling that the black Mk II
mentioned was actually bought from Nick Mason. I saw it pre-renovation
and it was in a pretty awful state. For one thing the keys on the left
hand side still had their little numbered stickers but they were in the
wrong order. The keys themselves were set like the Himalayas and the
tapes were bundles of brown spaghetti. I saw it about six months later
and it looked brand new.

FWIW, this was the Mellotron I tried to sell to Brian Wilson. Now *that*
was an interesting phone call.

If it really exists. Maybe the King only intended to one day have
a mellotron. ;-)

Aren't "Mellotron-related program activities" good enough these days?
