Live 'Tron in Toronto Wed. night

Live 'Tron in Toronto Wed. night

2005-04-13 by James Bailey

Howdy folks,

(With all the talk of hillbilly stuff recently I thought that would
be a good way of starting ;->)

Just re-joining the list after a too-long abcess... er, absence.

I had just sent a reply to a post forwarded to me by the esteemed
Mr. Belchta, and asked him to forward the following information,
then figured "hey, why not re-join and send it myself?" So apologies
if something like this appears twice.

The event is a weekly series called "The Ambient Ping,"
(http://www.theambientping.com/) which happens every Wednesday at
The Hacienda, 794 Bathurst St., just north of Bloor. The performers
this week are a trio called Finger, with guest Byron Wong on
Mellotron. I don't know which model, so if you're interested, you'll
just have to go there and find out. Admission is PWYC, suggested $5.

Best wishes to all, and hope to see some of you tomorrow (or today,
depending on when you read this).

I saw this advertised on the rec.music.ambient ng. Sounds like
it could be an enjoyable night out.

Re: Live 'Tron in Toronto Wed. night - NOT

2005-04-16 by James Bailey

Hi folks,

A little late getting to this, but I'm sorry to report that the 'tron
was a no-show at the Ping last Wednesday. Although I didn't get to
talk to Byron myself (perhaps Mr. Dale could help, as he was there,
and I believe did) he is awaiting it's arrival from Sweden which is
taking longer than expected.

The show otherwise was ok, though a bit too quiet during the first
set, especially considering the large amount of hum in the p.a. system.

Sorry I didn't manage to talk to you much, Chris, but had some things
to discuss with the event organizers and a few others and was hoping
we could chat during the break. Can't blame you for leaving before
then, though, what with the p.a. problem and lack of 'tron. I really
think you should try to get a gig there as you suggested, with your
vintage 'boards. Wouldn't recommend the double Wakeman-o-tron unless
you've got an army of helpers to get it up those stairs.

No tron, but the music was superb regardless. There was enough space,
atmosphere, melody, and electronics noise to make it worthwhile.

The tron is arriving from Sweden, a standard MK 6 I believe with Chamberlin
sounds on the tapes. Markus would have to clarify. Not looking to nitpick,
though I told Byron there is still an audible difference in hearing
Chamberlin sounds from a mellotron as opposed to an original Chamberlin. At
least there's been in the machines' I've heard anyway. He prefers the
Chamberlin over the tron due to what might be bandwidth, though he'd rather
have all the sounds tweaked to be perfectly in tune as well.

Well I was a little disappointed that there was no tron, but I actually
thought some of the P.A. problem sounded pretty good as extra noise!

There's lots of Yes fans in Toronto who would love to have the so called
"honour" of carrying it, though I think this would be a one time occurrence
once reality sunk in and they all realized how awkward and cumbersome it
could be.
