the Mellotron sound

2005-05-16 by xandre640

I am entirely new to the Mellotron, though I must have heard it
somewhere w/o knowing it, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me
what a mellotron sounds like, and share some examples of music that
features the 'tron.
I've been reciently intrigued by it thanks to an old article I
read about Dan the Automator, the underground Hip-Hop producer. I'd
appreciate any insight if it's not a bother.

Hi Xandre! Welcome to the fold!

The 'strings' and 'flutes' sounds are Mellotron. I think it's safe to
say that *any* sound played back on the Mellotron has the qualities
exhibited by these sounds; an endearing out-of-tune quality, a midrange
'honk' and a very slight wow-and-flutter. The wonderful thing about
Mellotrons is that you can sample one note-by-note and the result won't
sound exactly like a real one!
