you would probably want a sampler that can read/import AKAI format CDROMs.
ensoniq ASR, roland S7xx series, EMU [?], or even, i think, Kurzweil are
all capable of reading/importing these.

oh, or an actual AKAI sampler [duh!].

others can probably be more specific.
i have an ensoniq ASR-10 that imports AKAI formatted CDROMs.
i have them saved on a hard disk for fast easy retrieval.
[note: you will want at least 16 MEGS of memory to load a full set!]

the other option might be a software/PC/MAC-based sampler that can
import the samples, but i have no direct experience with that.

happy to help.

So if I had an Akai sampler, and the cdrom, I could just simply
connect my midi keyboard to the sampler and I'd be good to go?

yes -and the "duh!" was directed at myself for not initially realizing
that an AKAI CDROM is meant for... an AKAI sampler...

and same goes for ensoniq or emu samplers that can read the disc.
[akai uses a proprietary disc format using partitions to sort data]

That's right. But you need speakers and an amp too.

Samplers are wonderful things... Look at the tron, the FIRST sampler..

Go here and try this. It is very cool and works as a stand alone or as a vst.

VSampler 3.51

Have fun!

Frank ((lots of Mellotron stuff currently on site (4 400'S and the guts of a
fifth... and a keyboard from another. OH GODDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!))

I'm using Pinder's cd with VSampler 3, and I'm happy (Pinder is, imo,
the best among several alternatives). VSampler is a "soft sampler" (it
runs from a Windows PC), it reads more or less every known sample
format, including AKAI. You can download a demo here:
http://www.maz-sound.com/index.php?show=product&id=2. The full version
is available for purchase at $178.80, which is decent considering the
possibilities inherent in the software.

Good luck!

Dagfinn
