Re: Chamberlin Rhythmate

Re: Chamberlin Rhythmate

Spendy...only ten or so made? I thought there were quite a number more
than that...

Someone had one in Atlanta a few years ago and put it on eBay.
Beginning bid was only a few hundred dollars, and he got no bites I
suspect because he misspelled Chamberlin as Chamberlain. I don't
remember how I stumbled onto it...maybe I thought Rhythm Mate was two
words...??? Nowadays, if a misspell in eBay's search engine is
obvious...a little message pops up: "did you mean _______?"

(optagan, optiggon, optigon, awpptuhgawn, ...)

Anyway I e-mailed the person and suggested that s/he ought to try
again with the correct spellings...and after relisting I think they
got well over a grand for it...

Would I want one for $4,000? They're cool rhythm boxes (Kean had one
at his house in perfect order), but the innards some geppeto in a
backyard shop could easily build in an afternoon. The guy who built
the homemade 'tron using a gang mount of old Sony Walkman cassette
players would have a field day with a project like that.

I've actually had a chance to dig around inside Mattias Olsson's Rhythmate a
few years ago when he brought it with him to NEARfest. It wasn't working and
so he let me mess around with it. I got it working after a while but I regret
not taking photos of the inside of it. It looked like something someone
might have built in there garage

I thought it was very cool in a "Rube Goldberg" (dating myself) kind of way.

I love my Rhythmate...In my twenty odd years of drumming I have never heard a drummer that is so consistently sloppy and care free...Can you imagine the takes that didn't make it...?
The march especially is wonderful. It sounds like someone explained to the drummer how a march sounds and then he tried it once and then abandoned the idea halfway through...
I have started to suspect that it might be harry himself on a couple of them...
