Fwd: Emailing: bid-John Lennon's mellotron

Fwd: Emailing: bid-John Lennon's mellotron

2006-04-04 by Christopher Haley

This link is to a page when John Lennon's MK II mellotron went up for auction in 2003, it includes pictures and a specific description of the instrument.

PS. Harald Groskopf from Wallenstein informed me that Dierks Studios in Germany owned a MK II mellotron before they owned a M400. Thus most of the recordings which took place at Dierks in 1971 and 1972 (including most Bellaphon and Ohr releases) contain MK II mellotron. MK II and M400 appear together on the two Demon Thor recordings (the singer and main instrumentalist is the brother in law of Dierks.) The most recent recording I acquired which features it (and incidentally is not on Andy's tron list) is "This Is My Life" by Jeremy B. (1971 Bellaphon) which features Pete "Wyoming" Bender playing the MK II tron. Other recordings from this period which also feature the MK II are those by Embryo, Krokodil, Wind, Witthuser & Westrupp, Emtidi, Hoelderlin, Gila, Mythos, Frame, Message, Nektar's "Journey To the Center of the Eye", Missing Link, Wyoming, Ruphus Zupall, Electric Sandwich, Tangerine Dream's single "Ultima Thule", Marz, Broeselmaschine, Wallenstein, Jerry Berkers, Jeronimo, Midnight Circus, Marz and Epressy, and the first three Omega English language albums on Bellaphon. I am currently trying to personally contact Dieter Dierks regarding these most wonderful of all tron recorings which were produced at his studio. I'll let everyone know if I receive a response. CH

Just out of interest....

John Lennon's MKII mellotron has never gone up for auction and is alive and
not particularly well in a famous record producer's apartment. We've been to
see it and can guarantee it is the genuine article because it was one of
only six Black and Gold MKIIs built. Lennon's machine was also not sold in a
Christie's auction back in the 90's. It could well be not sold again soon!

Best,

Martin
