MK 1/2 'Tron...

MK 1/2 'Tron...

2006-04-18 by J.P.

... And "Hi again...
I just read the postings concerning the "half a MK 2" 'Tron... If this is the famous "Black Bitch" MK 2 'Tron once owned by Genesis...then it's also the infamous 3rd Mk 2 'Tron previously owned by King Crimson... used on the "Lizard " album... then sold to Genesis. When Robert Fripp put the Crimson 'Trons up for sale a few years ago, he mentioned that the 400's up for sale were first used on tour with the "Islands" line-up... and then used on the recording of "Islands". The two MK 2's that were for sale were used on "Court" and Poseidon"... "Lizard" wasn't mentioned. It's been stated before that Genesis bought their MK 2 from Crimson in late '70 early '71... so that's the "Lizard 'Tron".
BTW... did anyone ever buy any of the Crimson 'Trons? I know Fripp still has the "Court" MK 2 ... but did anyone get any of the others???
Hmmm...

I am sure that the Streetly's know the answer to that, but
I heard that they are still in Fripp's domain...

He sold none of them, AFAIK. This was partly due to him trying to sell
them all at once and partly (I imagine) because people were scared off
by what they assumed would be his asking price. Messrs Smith and Bradley
still have them all in storage at a Top Secret location. And yes, I've
seen the one with the blue carpet stuck to it and it looks mental.

Fripp once called me just before he was going to sell them off and
(among other things) asked if I'd like to buy the original ItCotCK Mark
II. I won't say what the asking price was, but it was *substantial*.
Martin thought it a bit high as well, particularly as it would need some
refurbishing (also at a cost) and would become 'just another Mk II'
afterwards. this is now the only one that Fripp has in his possession at
DGM World HQ. I'm sure I've seen a photo of it on his diary web pages at
some point in the past.

When I saw them in 1969 at the West Palm Beach Festival they had the tron
with the handles on the side. I believe that was the "Wake of Poseidon" tron
that they toured with. In any case, Ian McDonald would slam the reverb tank
onto the lid of the tron during "Devils' Triangle". No wonder they are in
this condition..
