Early '70's "Tron Concerts I saw.

Early '70's "Tron Concerts I saw.

2006-04-20 by fretless_ib

Hi all,

Just wanted to thank everyone for the posts, clips, and well....just
great stuff.

I saw King Crimson in late 1971 in Waterbury Connecticut.
Edgar Winter was the opening act.
I remember seeing two Mellotrons, one stage left, one stage right.
I wondered why they had two 'Trons, but only played one.
At the time, I didn't know that the 'Tron was so prone to breaking down.
Were they M-400's?
Looked like they might have been.....the cabinets were white.
I also saw The Moody Blues at Boston Garden in 1972.
I thought I was getting bad seats because we were in back of the band,
if any of you remember, Boston Garden was a round venue.
Turns out that they were GREAT seats!
I got to see Mike Pinder masterfully playing the MK 2 and a white
Fender Strat. on one song, and Ray Thomas playing a Bass Flute on
"When you're a free man."
"The Seventh Sojourn" wasn't even released yet.
(Shows you how old I am, by crakie!)

Anyhow, thanks for this group too.

Fretless,
I saw quite a few shows at BG-my only show behind stage was the infamous
Who show where someone lit some wooden chairs on fire after the opening
act then the Who came out;Keith stumbled onto his stool then couldn't
stay on it.Pete announced after 2-3 songs that Keith wasn't feeling well
and they'd have to cancel.

Damn Reply default!! Did it again!!

I saw King Crimson open for Edgar Winter at the Waterbury Palace
around the same time. Fripp and Collins occasionally played the very
reliable M400's simultaneously.

Hey Fartless,
Always lots of debate on this. With proper care and maintenance, they
can be the most reliable damn thing in the studio. When they do 'act
up', the fix is usually quick and easy. I wish I could say the same
for my digital sampler / computer!

Good point Clay. To be obscenely redundant, my Streetly M400 refurb
has turned on and worked as advertised for 5+ years. I've gone through
3 computers in that period.

Early '70's "Tron Concerts I saw.

2006-04-20 by Bruce Harvie

I went to see the Jefferson Airplane and the Moody Blues at the LA Forum on
Halloween Night, 1969...
The Airplane came out and said the Moodies couldn't make the gig due to
immigration hassles....
So-ooo 2 days later to make up for the no-show, both bands played a free
concert at Elysian Fields (near Dodger Stadium)...
They played on the back of a flatbed truck for about 1000 people, and I
stood right behind the 'Tron for the whole Moodies set....
Pretty cool.

Did you bury the knives with the wives? Sounds like an episode of Law and

Good point, Fritz. I've had my M400 since 1998 and I've gone through
three wives and three perfectly good breadknives.

That brings up the inevitable comparison between wives and Mellotrons. Both
need continuous maintenance. Both can be unreliable at times (but less so with
continuous maintenance) Some cost more to maintain than others.

And one you can't screw, though it can screw you. This most often only
happens in front of a crowd.

Interestingly, Justin Hayward refers to this very show during the introduction to, "The Actor" on their new live album (no orchestra). They had just released "...Lost Chord"

That moment has been captured on film. Keith Moon had taken gorilla
tranquiliser before the show started. Seriously.

Wives tend to go on for longer than eight seconds.
