Amazing new Strings at Streetly

Amazing new Strings at Streetly

2006-09-20 by kinchmusic@aol.com

Was up to see JB and MS yesterday.
I had a bit of time in hand and was able to hear a brilliant new string
combination..Sad strings blended with Tony Levins Electric Cello. Either as a
pre-set combination or preferably the 2 tracks side by side so you make your own
blend, the overall sound is incredibly powerful and melancholic. Just the
sort of thing to bring those hairs on the back of your neck up!... Wonderful.
Needless to say, they were both in fine form, with some exciting plans for
the future.
May they live long and prosper. ( yes I know....sad old Trekkie!)

Frank. Martin said he was going to have a word with Mike Dickson (sorry Mike
if this is the first you've heard of this) to see if he can put it on his
site.
Best.

Andy, how do you like the sound of the Tony Levin Electric Cello
compared to the standard cello? Did you get to hear the Ric Sander's
Electric Violin? Gordon Giltrap's Guitar Harmonics? None are in the
library and I'm dying to hear them.

Bernie.
The Tony Levin Electric Cello was a revelation! Having got used to the
classic Cello over the years, this new sound surprised me on 3 fronts. Firstly,
it's an immensely powerful sound, capable of testing the foundations of your
house! Secondly, it's a consistent sound as far as timbre and tuning is
concerned. Thirdly, and surprisingly. At the top end of the range, the sound becomes
very reedy, sounding like a cross between a clarinet/oboe and flute! You
could quite easily use it as a pad.
As I mention, combine it with Sad Strings, the overall effect becomes
awesome! Personally I would have the two on adjoining tracks as the potential for
blending on the new Streetly tape is well worth it.
Sorry, I didn't hear the other sounds you mention.
Hope this helps.
Andy K.
PS. A word on Sad Strings, which Martin has created from an unedited
original. This is different enough from mk2 3 violins and m300 strings to fully
justify it's position in any of our tape frames! Highly emotive...Nice.
PPS...A final word on "Boys Choir" If ever there was a case for tuning and
editing, this has to be it. I came away with this in a new frame and the
results of Martins labours are a truly lovely choir, gentle and atmospheric. Great
stuff.
Guys, please make full use of Martin and John's ongoing dedication to
refining and developing the machines we all know and love. I know they are
constantly looking at ways offering us new ideas on sounds/ mods etc. so that we may
all benefit in the long term.

I'm a big fan of Chamberlin cellos myself...wonder what they would
sound like put onto a tron frame? I use the Pinder CD Rom/E4K and
have created many nice splits and layers w/ tron and Chamberlin
sounds...it's interesting to layer or split both the tron and
Chamberlin cellos slightly panned l/r. I also made a massive multi-
layer of all the strings: MK2 violins,M300strings,viola,tron &
Chamberlin cellos.....awesome sound.

Andy, I know exactly what you mean about the Tony Levin Electric Cello
- when I was at Streetly a few weeks ago Martin played me that and the
Sad Strings (individually and combined) and I was completely blown
away by them both, especially the electric cello. Extremely powerful
with a nice deep rasp, and a very even timbre across the whole
keyboard. It, and the Sad Strings, are now high up on my list of tapes
to get in the future.

Boys Choir is another one I'm aiming to get one of these days. When I
went recently I picked up a new tape frame as well, including MkII
Piano and Italian Accordion, which were also tuned. The Piano is still
other-worldly and atmospheric as usual (works a treat with a touch of
reverb too) and the Italian Accordion in particular is gorgeous - it's
fast becoming one of my favourite sounds.

I'll drink to that - incidentally, having seen and fallen in love with
the M4000 prototype, all I shall say is this, to the lucky devils
among you who have one on order: to say that you are in for an
absolute treat is understatement of the year!

Thanks for the review Andy. Tony Levin's Electric Cello and Boys
Choir have been on my list for a while now (along with several of
the other new sounds). I've been trying to stay the purist, but
after hearing so many positive comments about the tuned sounds, I
think that's the way to go. Martin and John have been working their
hind quarters off to bring us new and improved sounds (and new
machines), and I hope to take advantage of the fruits of their
labors very soon.

So, what would be the perfect tape set utilizing the new blended tuned sounds for a m400?
I know it's a matter of personal preference, but if one wanted to develope a tape set using the tuned sounds and wanted to have a set that would represent a string symphany (with Tony's electric cello)
what order would you place the sounds on Stations A, B and C?

How about a new take on an old standard? a) Ian McDonald Flute b)
Sad Strings c) Tony Levin Cello.

Wait. That's not a string symphony. How about a) Ric Sanders Violin
b) Gothic c) Tony Levin Cello? Or replace b) with Angry Strings.
