painted vs. anodized aluminum ...

painted vs. anodized aluminum ...

2006-08-31 by Jonathan Snipes

A question for those of you who screen your own panels ...

I have some 5052 grade 0.125" thick aluminum cut to size that I'm
going to be using for panels. Should I get this anodized to the
proper color, or is it suitable to paint before screening? what
sorts of paint/ink should I use to paint/screen if this is acceptable?

just curious to see what the common consensus is ... clearly anodized
is "nicer" but also more work & more expensive ... wondering if it's
worth the effort.

I used Aluminium primer and then typical acrylic spray. Actually 2 of them to get nice colour effect. Works like a charm.
Because of very high unliquidness (is that a word?) the primer could not be sprayed, byt roll-painted, so the surface isn't so smooth as it would be with anodizing, but it could be silkscreened without any problems. It was then covered with transparent acrylic spray.

Thanks, Roman - that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

do you have pictures of your front panels, out of curiosity?
