I mostly have no problem with the policy but recognize that discomfort with it is subjective. But there is one part of the AH policy which may be truly wrong. You say:

"We assume that by buying modular musical equipment you are aware of the basic operational techniques of modular synthesis."

This alienates people who want to get into it and learn. I mean, what school do they teach modular synthesis in? Certainly not my high school. When I started, I knew absolutely ZIP. It took a while to learn what was going on, and now after a few years of being an owner and hobbyist I'm very comfortable with it and even ready to build some simple circuits of my own. You shouldn't discourage people who are newbies and are inspired by artists they see using this kind of stuff.

Roger at Big City Music was willing to educate me a bit and show me a few tricks to get me started. I think this is a good model. And a seller also emphasize that it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to plug power ribbons in the correct way. (Although you know there are checks for that like fuses and your protected power source.)

Also, just curious, what is the thing about "only plug outputs into inputs" etc? Can anyone give an example of a problem occurring when getting too experimental with patches? I always thought that if you stay away from high voltages nothing will be harmed.

to put it simply if inelegantly, it's a different time. you could make
the argument (and i am) that stating overtly (and justifiably frankly)
a policy that is the SOP for the people it represents is far better
than letting it go unspoken. to draw a parallel to a company oft
compared to this one (they also make use of opto-isolators), i would
offer that their customer service was far worse. i've even heard that
back in the seventies buchla (oopps) on ocassion refused to do
business with people who were too difficult to deal with.*

maybe peter should raise the prices three fold, higher more people,
drop quality, & raise production. i understand that people are miffed
about whatever; it sucks to put hard, very hard, earned cash down and
have nothing to show for it. but given the awful customer service at
other instrument companies (give DOD/Digitech a call about the WH-1
some time) folks might want to count themselves lucky for not being
told to fuck off.

my friend waited for his easel for, if i remember correctly, over a
year (i may have said this before) before it showed up unannounced.

handmade dammit!
