to punce on this  ! Digital circuits , we we have to agree they can 
make for some really bad filters and in general can really fall 
short of the mark at times but in realtion to creative sound design 
digital can be cool.

Everyone's opinion is legit, so here is mine:

I'm not so keen on digital when used for sound generation or 
processing (outside of delay, where digtal completely 
outperforms analog)...but for control voltage generators they are 
supurb.  Random voltages, sequencers of course (all 
sequencers are digital at their core,  little difference if that binary 
data is coming from a microP or CMOS) ), EG's , panners - these 
are SCREAMING for digital.  

Imagine an envelope generator that could give you a standard 
output, a synced ramp output a REVERSE output...all in realtime 
and at the same time.  You won't have to imagine this for too 
long..because it's coming (that's a hint).  Now try doing that with 
analog.

As far as filters - I have to agree, analog rules.  But this is not to 
say a dsp filter couldn't be an interesting variant - like if you had 
one amongst a slew of analog filters.  It would be limiting 
however if one only had digital's.  As far as VCOs - computer 
generated waveforms can be very accurate (perfect sine, that 
sort of thing) and unquestionably stable...but IMHO, these two 
parameters aren't the most critical.  Frequency modulation is 
and this is where digital VCOs fall short..very.  Ever try to put a 
chiff transcient on a digital VCO?  In a word:  eeeeeeew.

I think the best rule is to approach each situation independently.  
It's foolish to avoid digita technology just for the sake of insisting 
something be all analog, as if that's more legit, or divine, or as 
you said, pure..  If digital can accomplish a certain task more 
efficiently, more elegently, then do it.  But one must not ingore the 
shortcomings of both mediums - and that's when a good 
engineer would show no prejeduces. 

For instance - the Buchla 200e.  If any engineer was handed a 
written spec for that instrument with the assignment to design it - 
99 out of 100 would approach it exactly the way Don Buchla did.  
You can't do a 200e all analog - can't be done.

So each has it's place.


If the idea with plan b and livewire stuff is to create new and rare 
old modules and tap into the musicians who are trying to make 
new forms etc then some form of digital hybrid and weird alient 
technology is maybe one way forward , not that the 'traditional ' :) 
doesnt get us right out there , i am sure there is the

melt of those old circuits . . . . thats what sold me on the Plan b
