m14 first impressions

Well, got my Model 14 from Analogue Haven today. Very interesting
method of construction, check out the bulk of the Channel A pcb and
you'll see what I mean.

The dense functionality of the module is what appealed to me.. as an
avid user of the A-138c I looked forward to adding some similar
parallel ability to my rapidly expanding system. It pretty much does
what it says.

All this crossfader talk raised my expectations for that part of the
design (didn't previously care too much about it, was expecting a
m13-esque fader), and it works as the web copy described. It'll take
some time to fully think of some new compositional angles to wedge
into the crossfader. My personal plans for the module include a more
meaningful way of mixing my increasingly grotesque triple-logic-gate
pulse streams (pseudo-Binary Zone type stuff here) and more general
control voltage mixing and extraction by way of the min/max selectors.
Haven't tried the crossfader VCA trick yet but it's good to know that
I have it around.

I think the main disadvantages of this module are the higher current
draw and the slight control crowding when patched up, but these are
pretty minor complaints. Overall, I think it was worth the wait for
the thing to be released, and I'm glad to see this sort of
full-featured stuff in Euro format. I'm putting it to the test this
week in a massive analog jam with like-minded musicians... should be fun.

Bring on the Model 10, my Model 13 needs some flogging.
