other waveforms?

other waveforms?

2009-01-15 by Monroe Eskew

Can anyone think of other waveforms besides the standard ones that
might be interesting to have in a synth? (Standard = sine, saw,
triangle, rectangle)

I could think of lots of neat looking waveshapes which would be nice to have come out of an oscillator but the trouble is that they probably don't have proper names. there are some cool oscilloscope videos on youtube of waves made by the AFG which are non traditional and the Plan B Model 15 does some neat things with its Morph function but I think that the reason we don't see more of these unconventional waves on oscillators is because there are so many pieces of equipment (like bit crushers and slew generators) which can alter pre-existing waveshapes to create all sorts of timbral variety. In the end that's probably why they are the standard waves, they're easy to produce, have names which are easy to remember and describe their shape and the shapes themselves only mean they have diffrent harmonic content a morphed wave from an Model 15 might sound very much like some of the AFG waves and to the untrained ear they probably all sound a bit like animated pulse waves.

that's my take on it, That said I'd also love to see lots more variety or even just more fully featured oscillators on the market.

My rig right now doesn't even have sine waves on the oscillators grumble grumble

unless I've got the wrong end of the stick, this is where waveshapers come into their own, also it's worth looking at additive synthesis and FM for creating complex waveforms.

There are some interesting waveshapers going around in the sDIY crowd.
Ian Fritz has a lot of inspirational waveshaper circuits.

Here is a VCO someone made with a pretty awesome feature set (includes
Fritz's double pulse waveform).

Also, Peter pioneered the homer waveform, but if I recall correctly it
was left off the model 15 due to space restraints.

Ian Fritz is one of the best SDIY'ers out there.

That second VCO just blows my mind. I would love to get my hands on one of those pre-assembled

Very interesting. That "sweep" waveform is a nice simple shape that you don't see much. It's looks similar to something you can produce with an rs95 by using the "sine shape cv in" which is probably a little-known feature of this oscillator. The rs95 shape is more rounded than the sweep, I think, which would mean the sweep has more high frequency overtones. The rs95 shape sounds pretty good; it throws in a distinct harmonic coloring without adding any buzz.

I believe it.

I got a Chaos Computer recently and the range of sounds it's capable of makes my head spin it's easily one of my favourite modules
