I have a question for Roy Harrington concerning the reproduction curve of the QTR perceptual table. The strategy seems to be to translate at least 4 decimal values between L*1 and L*2 to well distinguished places along the toe of the tone curve. I am simply curious to learn the thinking behind this strategy. Most perceptual tables tend to swallow all data below L*2 into a belt of maximum black. I assumed this was to ensure a generalised spread of Dmax peppered behind the image, perhaps it is also meant to separate noise from light. Adobe black point compensation also carries the threshold to L*2. Does placing the threshold so low along the curve reflect a strategy in black point adjustment?
