print quality changing with page setup selection

posting for a friend. The problem as described to me, by an experienced user- sharpness quality suddenly dropped, and now the sharpness quality is varying with page setup. She's using a 4800 with oem inks, a setup she's been using for years now. The same 8x8' image, always at 100% is soft in different degrees depending on page setup size (all large than 8x8 of course), and the behavior is consistent.
Additionally, the custom page setups she created are now grayed out. She could live with that, the sharpness problem is the issue, and that it varies with page size indicates a problem.
I should add, the same 8x8 image, before these problems arose, printed on the same setup sharper than anything she can get now at any page size.
