I've used a Colormunki Photo device to take the readings needed to 
create QTR curves, but that was a few years ago, and can't remember the 
details. There's a description of the process on the Northlight Images 
website (

) and a test page specifically designed for reading the 'black' 
densities with the ColourMunki (chevrons rather than rectangular boxes).
There's a lot of useful information for monochrome printers on that site.
