Simply put, the in the Windows QTR gui, "Density" is the cross over point in the gray curve and is a percentage of the total black ink (for either mk or pk).

In the .txt file creation process on the Mac this is the "GRAY_VAL_n= " variable.

The overlap is not as arbitrary as some people have claimed, and the more precise the overlap/density/gray_val settings, the fewer potential problems you will have in the linearization phase of the profile creation process. This is especially true if you are creating profiles with more than three gray inks.
