some papers cause QTR-Linearize-Quad to fail to create a new "lin" .quad file

2015-10-04 by David Lykes Keenan

I'm creating some custom .quad files specific to Special Edition inks on a 3800 printer.

I have printed 51-step targets on:
  • Epson Cold Press Bright
  • Epson Cold Press Natural
  • Canson BFK Rives
  • Epson Enhanced Matte
  • Canson Rag Photographique
  • Epson Velvet Fine Art

I read the resulting targets with i1PRO and i1Profiler software.

QTR-Linearize-Quad fails to create the "lin" .quad file for Epson Cold Press Natural and Canson BFK Rives. It works on the other four papers.

Just in case there is some incompatibility with the new i1Profiler software, I remeasured the same 51-step target using MeasureTool5. This made no difference.

I discovered that the problem with the .txt measurement file for Cold Press Natural came down to two L values at Q1 and Q3. Blindly, since these numbers really don't mean much to me, I substituted values from the .txt file for one of the papers that didn't have a problem -- and, voila, I had a lin quad file (albeit not completely valid). Say what???

Any ideas? Should I reprint the targets with a different .quad file to begin with? I originally picked .quad files that were as close to the paper, ink, and printer that I have since there is no exact match (hence the reason for this exercise).

Help?

.
Dave.
