Both methods - calibration mode and a custom curve using only that channel - should work. I've used both. Like Michael I use the calibration mode approach. If you're getting something on LC in a nozzle check but nothing by printing a LC (R,G,B) (247,0,255) purge pattern in calibration mode then something can't be right about how you're printing the purge pattern.
