Re: [QuadtoneRIP] 2 Channel Profile for printing films.. how?

2017-08-21 by Simone Simoncini

Hi. I do not want to go off topic in this discussion, just contribute with a bit of experience I have had in trying to get halftones out of an epson printer. I agree with the previous reply that is much much easier to get a dedicated software to print the halftones.

What I understood is that both the epson driver and the qtr driver have their own "halftoning" engine using certain dithering algorithm. Gimp print (Gutenprint) allows you to bypass this engine by specifying a pre-dithered input. This aims to lay down one drop of ink for each pixel of the pre-dithered image, much alike to laser printing behaviour. However, I found very tricky (though not impossible) to set up a working environment with this scheme and ended up buying a rip software which does the job for you.

Accurip is a good spftware if you have to go up to say 105lpi, which is ok for tricolor gum dichromate. It depends on what process you are into.

Today it may even prove feasible and coat effective to buy an old CTF machine aka imagesetter with far better results than any inkjet solution.

The only problem is space, imagesetters with their own developing unit take quite a bit of space, but really ease your workflow especially if you have to use pinpoint registration for multi layered images.

Right now I gave up epson and switched to Hp z3200 44in which I currently use both for digital printing and digital negs with the hp workflow (no longer supported, but the linearity of uv absorbsion of the green hp ink males the whole process largely easier than qtr calibration).

Hope this is useful.
Thanks

Hello,

I am the proud owner of a mostly working Epson 4900. I would like to repurpose the orange and green channels to use them with pure black dye ink, for the creation of screen printing films, while leaving the other channels untouched. Therefore, I need to create a profile with only these two channels. Ideally, they both would print a 50% density, so in the end, I have a decent opaque film for exposure. I don't need any half tones or shades, just pure black and transparent parts.

So far in theory :-)

Now I9;m stuck with the creation of such a profile. I tried to read each and every tutorial on QTR that I found, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for.

Some of the files I found within QTR have informations about the used colors and the used printers while some other have just long columns of numbers. Which are the right ones and how do I start out with this?

Is it even possible to do?

I know I can just go the route via the calibration mode and use the colors from the purge-images as a background color. I tested it and it works. However, I would prefer a profile so I could use both orange and green instead of just one, just to keep the ink flowing and not risking more dead channels.

Thanks in advance for any kind of help!

Kind regards,

Pugsley
