Settings on QTR/PS CS2 for Epson 4000 Prem Luster? Major issues here...

2006-04-22 by delicateshades

I know this usually amounts to one click or one item here or there, so
if anyone is interested in sharing their
knowledge/expertise/friendliness, I would be quite appreciative.

I'm printing on an Epson 4000 with QTR through PS CS2 with a Mac
running 10.4.5.

So far, I've gotten some decent looking prints on Epson's Enhanced
Matte paper with the Quad4000 driver using the following settings:

-Document Profile: Adobe RGB 1998
-Color Handling: Let Photoshop Determine Colors
-Printer Profile: Pro4000EnhancedMatte (or QTR RGB Matte Paper...I
can't see a difference)
-Rendering Intent: Perceptual (with BPC)

then in the QTR print dialog, I use:

-Printer: Quad4000
-Mode: QuadTone RIP
-Curve: none OR the EEnhMatte (name might be off on spelling)
-Black Ink: Matte
-Resolution: 1440
-High Speed: Faster

----These settings produce some pretty nice looking stuff. The blacks
aren't as deep as I'd like, but the image is acceptable. Any pointers
here would be helpful.

My real problem came when I decided to swap the Epson Enhanced Matte
roll for my Epson Premium Luster roll.

Now, I cannot get a good print for the life of me and I have no idea
what is going wrong...

I print similar to above...

-Document Profile: Adobe RGB 1998
-Color Handling: Let Photoshop Determine Colors
-Printer Profile: Pro4000PremiumLuster 250
-Rendering Intent: Perceptual (with BPC)

then in the QTR print dialog, I use:

-Printer: Quad4000
-Mode: QuadTone RIP
-Curve: none (is there an Epson EnhMatteLuster curve set?)
-Black Ink: Photo
-Resolution: 1440
High Speed: Faster

My prints come out very very dense, almost no highlight/midtone detail.

I've tried switching the Printer Profile to QTR Gray Photo Paper,
Gamma 2.2, et cetera...I've played with a lot of different settings,
yet, I cannot seem to get a good print from the QTR on Luster Paper...

I looked at this message from Roy:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/message/1524

but it didn't get me a good print either.

The print head is aligned, clean clogs, et cetera. Latest QTR
software, I only got it two weeks ago.

Any advice, pointers, ideas and the like are welcomed. I would like
to think I'm a whiz with the computer, but printers seem to be a new
black hole for me to fall into with all these dialog boxes...

Grateful in L.A.-L.A.-land,
David
